Getting ready to install my new Safari Snorkel.

We have really heavy rain storms/hurricanes in The Bahamas.

So if I am driving 50mph in a heavy rain storm with the snorkel on, there gonna be lots of water going down the snorkel.
What stops the water from being force fed into the engine?

It's got a vortex thing inside it iirc to stop the water getting in.

If you are really worried fit the top the other way round.
 
I have looked at the ram thingy and how it attaches, no way that that will stop water from going down.
Unless I am missing a part?

they have been using them for decades on semi trucks and they don't get flooded/water logged. And look at construction equipment with raised/snorkel air intakes

but where does the water go that happens to make it down the snorkel?
 
You would be suprised how little actually gets in there. Guessing it drips out the bottom of the filter box. Always wondered this myself TBH. It's like a tape cassette I know it works just never found out how :D

it would be mist and either in airfilter or have a higher moisture of air for combustion. Water injection is used in truck and tractor pulls. There is a air vortex/push in front of intake. Look at wind tunnel test on front of cars and see the swirl of air in front of it. would be the same on a snorkel, but in a smaller scale.

Ask how do jets fly in the rain;)
 
Mine has been fitted for approx 3 years and never been any damp in there and thats with all the filter and inner wing dump valves sealed shut.
I dont think they are that good as when mine is connected there is a very slight loss in power, so all this talk of ram air is total bollacks, Iirc ram air only happens at something over 100 mph!

any slower and she will go backwards.

I have a feeling this snorkel will sit on the shelf in my garage:(
 
I had the same thought so did a bit of searching and found this: Safari FAQ

I would agree to what others have said I have not heard of any engines being damaged.

Fitting mine this weekend :)

I go up blue bell hill daily and its a long steep climb, normally flat out in 4th gear as its wont pull 5th, well it will buts way to slow! and after fitting snorkel I could tell straight away it was down, contacted safari, their reply? where did I buy it? and most people report an increase in power, well all I can say is most people talk ****!
If you increase intake pipe length you must be introducing some restriction? plus the pipework is only 60mm id right up to the air filter, so hardly big bore:D
 
if you have a ram head on it just turn it around will work just as well and wont get water down it or the other sugestion is dont go out in the rain and it defo wont get wet :p:D
 
The bottom of the head has four slots in it, any rainwater shoud make its way out of these, just look at the Safari Snorkle website for details.
Mine has been fitted for 10-years now with the head facing rearwards, no problems whatsoever and no loss in power.

 
I assume yours is a 300tdi?
I ask as the 300 has a much simpler and less twisty pipe run from the snorkel to the air filter, the 200 is like snakes and ladders!
