Hi

my 1994 safari door hinges have a nut at the bottom of each. Then a washer with a tab. Finally a spring that goes inside “barrel”

they don’t work great as original.

all the ones I see online seem to have the barrel innards enclosed

should I be trying to tighten until everything is inside. Or replace.

Not sure what you mean by "safari door" ?

If you mean the rear door, on the back of the body, the spring should sit under the hinge, over the pin, and with the nut screwed on to the pin, and held in place by the tab washer.

It sounds as though you need a new pin, spring, nut, and washer, probably available for a few quid.
