Evening chaps, I mentioned this a little while ago and one or two people asked me to put some pictures up of when I finally did the deed... well its probably not the right place but it seems most of LZ has no interest in Range Rovers other than the victims of the Range Rover support group, sorry forum.

Anyway some might remember my P38 has been for sale for a few weeks and she went a couple of weeks ago, I also managed to sell my E63 650i the week before the P38 with the idea of buying a Supercharged L322 and some sort of track car. Well after a busy couple of weeks I've managed to do both (and spend a fortune on bits, mainly for the track car it has to be said!)

So onto the pictures!

I managed to buy an MY07 S/c Range Rover, so it has the later interior and all the upgrades from MY06 (S/C AJV8 and 6 speed gearbox) plus the optional electronic rear diff. I cannot stress how impressed I am with it, it is wonderful! Being a Supercharged its essentially a Vogue SE with a few extra bits of trim. Being an MY07 it has RSE as standard (was dropped in MY08 I'm told) however in a curious quirk and one last little land roverism. Despite MY07 coming out in the July (I think) of 06, vehicles built until December had the old style BMW 3 button key rather than a later Flip style key (similar to a P38). My car missed out on this by a couple of weeks it seems but not the end of the world. Surprisingly everything works included the heated and cooled front seats and the RSE, just three small niggles to deal with, the first is the tyres. It has some fairly knobbly General Grabbers which I am swapping for Scorpions on Monday to cut down on tyre roar, the second is a weird noise which I can't quite pinpoint under hard acceleration. It sounds like a bit of paper catching a fan, very strange. The last is the drivers seat is a little tired (not surprising for 120k!) but I've a local detailer who recons he can improve on its condition. However apart from that its perfect!

Really not LR related but I also bought this little 330ci Sport to chuck round the track a couple of times a year. Doesn't look to bad in the pictures but its pretty rough up close, however the price reflected that and mechanically shes pretty good!

Cheers fellas. I'm all out of Andrex I must admit!

Although the 650i was much faster, for a Range Rover the performance is uncanny. Especially mid range and the gearbox is mapped brilliantly. It's actually the same box as in the 650i, but where as in that application any moderate prod of the throttle would invoke a downshift and suddenly you've got 5k on the rev counter and you're very far away from where you were. The S/C just pulls on the torque of its remarkable power plant which is far more sensible and allows for relaxed progress making rather than looking like a cock!

23mpg on a 65-70 motorway cruise. My 4.6's might have managed 20 at that.

Touch screen navigation is dated but functional, it does have full post code search. It is however quite sophisticated with its off road infoamrtion and this one has terrain response with the surface selection dial. It's quite interesting that the actual manual height selection is down played. There is also no automatic lowering at higher speeds (unless over 100mph!) lowering to access height is done by a switch in the drivers door miles from the manual height control. I've not used the venture camera yet. This is a Bluetooth camera which can be fitted to the outside of the vehicle or a trailer using a special mount so you can view what's going on outside on the central screen. A fore runner to the surround view system installed on later vehicles.

The Brembo brakes are a different world compared to a p38, as is the handling. The biggest improvement though is the quality of the thing, for example selecting low range is not a noisey clunky affair. It's silent, same with things like the abs pump and air compressor are all but inaudible!

One final observation for now, it is enourmous compared to a P38. The space in the back and boot Are greatly improved. The downside of this is that it really does take up a lot of room! Only an issue in car parks really but it's a big girl on the drive!
 
Hi, very good write-up and picks.

Although, we call ours Black Beauty or The Beast depending on whether or not she is making us smile or cry, it remains a love affair that the whole family is drawn into.

To anyone dreaming of taking the "Supercharged" plunge make sure your not alone, you'll need to share the joy and pain as there will be issues. We just take each one at a time and make them part of the journey.

After buying our 07 Supercharged last July and running it around France for a few weeks I can confirm it is by far the most brilliant vehicle I have ever owned. Though we did experience the pain last month when the gearbox let go, but with 120K on the clock and best part of 400 bhp going through it, something had to give. I would definitely advise getting the gearbox oil changed as soon as possible and make sure the latest gearbox programme has been downloaded to avoid problems further down the line. It would be nice to be able to update the radio satnav display but there is nothing on the market and the later 09/10 facelift system is not compatible.
Saving my pennies now for a 5.0 litre supercharged
 
Will look into a gearbox service, it feels fairly reasonable at the moment and I am assured its had the latest gearbox software installed by LR so thats one less job to do.

To be honest I have done around 700 miles in it now and its felt fine, however it was a majority of motorway cruising (pretty much what this car has spent its life doing by the sounds of things)

Going to collect it later on this evening now its had an interior valet and 5 new tyres fitted. Very excited at the prospect, ive been sent some pictures of the before and after and the seats are a different colour there was so much grime, yet they didn't look so bad at first!

It's another way of saying screens in the back. I have just done a google search and found out. The information really is, all out there, for the price of a search engine.
I will admit people not searching is a pet hate of mine and I can get really snarly about it, as it strikes of entitlement to expect others to do the work for them. There are questions that it is great to have the help, knowledge and experience of the guys and girls on the forums but some questions can be answered by just using the search bar/ engine.

Maybe some people do a search and find that the internet is not as useful as it needs to be. Hence then revert to car fora to find some answers from enthusiasts.

Yours seems to confirm that Range drivers also come with a significant level of pretention and upnosiness.
 
I agree with you newbie swede, unless it's her asking the questions then everyone else must google, it's the khaki pinny syndrome I'm afraid.:(
Thankfully her ilk, rare as they are, just keep schtum when feeling unhelpful.;)

In the main you will only be met with help and kindness. But do be be gracious in return with thanks and follow ups to your ills, all too many never do alas.

I'm not sure who has been pretentious or shown 'upnosiness' (?) to you. The guys and girls on here are, in the main, very helpful and some members are incredibly knowledgeable, whether as keen owners or as trained mechanics.
If you mean my comments about using a search bar/engine, I have admitted my bugbear, I even have it as my signature. It pops up mainly when answers are easily found. However, at no point have I been pretentious, as I have no need to try to impress anyone, least of all yourself. Nor have I at any point looked down on you (I think that's what you mean by 'upnosiness'?) I believe that I have been nothing but polite to you, despite my growl about searches.
Range Rover drivers are like all other humans, they come in all shapes and sizes, all beliefs , all attitudes and with a multitude of behaviours. However, I will add this is the most helpful, informative forum I have been on and filled with people ready to assist. My membership of the Volvo Owners Club forum highlighted this for me, if highlight was needed. Yes , those who hang about seem to have a strange sense of humour and are quite straight talking but that is why I like it. I know that if I broke down near any of the contributing members I would be assured a hot coffee on a cold day, a cold drink on a hot day and the rip taken out of me whilst I waited for recovery. If feeling that way about virtual strangers equates to them being pretentious, then I can only wish for more people like them.

As mentioned RSE stands for Rear Seat Entertainment, it was an option on the L322 although for a few model years it was standard on some trim levels, MY06 and MY07 in particular on the Vogue SE (Or Supercharged, as that was at least a Vogue SE + supercharged extras) Here on it gets a little complicated, I believe for MY08 it was dropped as standard an offered as an option on ALL models. Also be careful with autobiography, its really an individualising process for the cars but often people add to the top spec but its not unknown for people to take things away! RSE is essentially the factory fit rear screens, with a DVD changer in the boot with two sets of wireless IR headphones and a remote. Its actually quite a good system (I've found anyway) but it is a little dated. I've only used it when controlling it from the front and for playing DVD's for my little boy but it works well for what I need. Without going into mega detail its possible to have each screen displaying either DVD, TV or radio but if both screens are watching a DVD then it has to be the same one etc.

As for the "gearbox". For MY06 (essentially built from mid 2005 onwards) on the 4.4 jaguar v8 and 4.2 S/C a ZF6HP26 (6 speed) was fitted with the OLD interior, for MY07 (September ish 06 onwards and the introduction of the TDV8) the interior was updated to include terrain response and the redesign of the gearbox selector (and surrounding panel) plus all the other improvements. (TD6 had to continue with its Cheese'o'matic GM box until that old horse was retired, the TD6 NEVER got the updated interior)

However all 4.2S/C and 3.6 TDV8's share the same gearbox and AJV8 4.4's also have the same. Infact an updated version of the 6 speeder was used on the 5.0 S/C where as the 4.4 TDV8 got an 8 speed ZF box.

Another subtle difference (and my research gets a touch inconclusive at this point) I believe the REAR electronically locking diff was ONLY available from MY07 as an option on everything APART from the S/C. So to take from that, an MY07 (new interior) S/C should have a rear locking diff. All other models from MY07 MIGHT have one if originally specced.

Been looking around at few Ranges on Monday (at a place in Amersham called Motor Store)(guys have approx 25 RR's there).

What struck me was how badly the interiors had aged. The 2007-2008 cars had very tatty interiors (worn leather, plastics discoloured, etc).
I thought the Japanese cars like my Shogun had pretty sad interiors, but my 2003 145000m car had a much fresher interior than the ones I saw. Normal? :eek:
