tis this 4.6 i got

i know it runs excellent..i now know its an lr genuine service replacement..

but upon taking rocker covers off i discover a csae of black death..

now what to do???

i have inlet off, and will be replacing v gasket..so do i strip timing cover off,v gasket, and sump and clean as best as i can..i recon diesel will stift it, its not gone like concrete yet..or leave as is?
concerned about lifters getting ****e in them and crap getting where it should not,but i recon/hope i can flush out the crap out of bottom of engine with sump off..

thoughts please from those of you who have the displeasure of owning these horrible engines..though i must admit,it sint engines fault..AND people slate me when i change my engine oil at 1000 to 3000 miles max!
why dont people change their oil!!???

Run it on 10W-40 diesel oil, it will gradually clean that out.

Ours has run on Chevron Supreme 10W-40 semi-synthetic since the rebuild, it keeps the engine really clean internally, the pics below were when the had the heads off at about 45k after the rebuild:

I recommend the stuff as I have used it on all of our vehicles, diesels and petrol, and Philip's D2 V8 which was pretty hossible as well is showing signs of the worst of it coming out each time we change the oil.

We run 8000 mile oil changes, but we are on LPG and the oil stays clear the whole time, we can always see the dipstick through the oil.

well i can get hold of 10w40 full synth..but its low saps..but it wont half clean it due to it being diesel stuff..

in my lexus powered rrc i run modile1 10w 60 full syth and change at max 3000miles and that runs lpg..one can eat your dinner off the internals!!

my reconing is oil is cheaper espically taking into consideration my labour than rebuilding engine!

so..leave as is and flush with oil..?

You don't need fully synthetic, semi-synthetic is fine, it's the 'diesel' bit that is important, that has the extra detergent properties that gives the cleaning action.

well..engine half stripped..started to clean it,sump coming off as is timing cover..

getting better

Must admit I was just remarking today at how clean modern diesels are inside despite being pitch black, maybe it's because they run cool but was working on a Rangey 3.0d and for instance the dipstick was lovely and clean whereas on a petrol they're always gummed up and often rusted.

Wasn't sure how much the oil has to do with preventing deposits sticking but I have never seen a internally crusty Diesel engine to be fair...

everything ,the detergents do clean ,run a diesel on low detergent oil and it looks like a v8

When I used to muck around buying and selling and got badly sludged engines - I used to replace the oil with ATF and go for a 50 mile drive, flush, fill with cheap oil + a litre of ATF. ATF eats though just about any engine sludge - you are risking causing a blockage by mobilizing all that sludge though! The ATF trick was great for unblocking sludged up hydraulic lifters too.

sump has been off and black crap washed through onto floor..

Yeah, I think redex is mainly ATF. Pouring ATF down your carb is a good 2 stroke trick for decarbonising the internals. Gets pretty smoky though for a minute:D
