I would be gratful for some pointers. I am looking at a 2010 Range Rover but the car is on the far side of the country so it is potentially a "buy and deliver" transaction. The mileage is low relatively (under 40,000), there is a full service history and good MOT record so it all sounds good. I've been told there is no rust in the tailgate, but " some light rust under the wheel arches but not on the bodywork" and have been provided with the attached photos. I am particularly concerned about the 4th picture. Is this to be expected for a 10 year old RR or something to be wary off? Any comments would be gratefully received as this would be my first Range Rover and I don't want to make a big mistake! Cheers. H.

If its rusting on the wheel arches then it will show through to the body work soon. The wheel arches are made of boron steel which goes brittle when welded.can be done in short runs to minimise the amount of heat . Where is the car, maybe a member is close and can have a look for you.

Thank you for your helpful comments. Is this a common site for rust in these cars (L322) as far as you know?
 
L322's are prone to rusting in the arches, poor protection and moisture held against from the secondary seal is a recipe for disaster..

They rot under the sill covers too..

You have to remember it is a 10+yr old car now, my Dad bought a 1989 Vm Range rover in 1999 and it was rotten.. ;)

Wam once said to me the newish stock is now built to a price and not to last, sadly I have seen a lot of newish landys with very bad rust all over them, sorry to say they are just not built the same as a P38a

+1 to that. I'm getting an l322 tomorrow for 250€ rot box...
 
My 2003 if it can be used as a comparison, has rusted at the end of the sills and at the outer edges of wheel arches. If it had received some rust treatment this may not be anywhere quite so bad. the sills were welded 2years ago. the arches do not at present effect the MOT. the rear subframe had corroded on the outer mounting points and i suspect other early RR will be suffering the same now. So as long as your 2010 RR is not from Scotland then id think it would be good till 2027 and with care now a few years after that.

Whoever fitted them mudflaps wants kicking! as for that rust yes it looks well established and will only get worse.

welcome to the weird and wonderful and annoying and frustrating and expensive world of the l322
im sure someone will add more in above:rolleyes:
there is a link about this i put up a bit back,
apparently rr in their wisdom made the giant collander then only fitted 1 rear most wheel arch lip protector for each side of the rear arches,leaving the front to rot:(and spread and after time the protector that was there rots off.
that link shows how this can be remedied/improved, i think they use a freelander trim, but i got mine on the bay and replaced the entire arch with it.

mine is 05 has no rust, its about the best bit , see my posts on suspension:D
and they do rot,that screw and new hex bolt on the picture isnt right and i would want to see underneath it,looks too fresh, and jacking points rot, removing sill cover will show.


these cars look the biz and you can easily be swayed by your heart,
they are very capable but equally capable of emptying your wallet destroying home life and leaving you on a permanent downer,with the samaritans on speed dial on your phone, if you want one of these check everything works or take a friend who knows their many pit falls.
