There are a few fixes for this problem.
You can get a new battery box and rivet it in:
021 n s battery box
Or you can do as you say and cut it out and weld it up.
Mine was pretty rusty but not totaly gone so I put a sheet of glass mat into the battery box and fibreglassed it all, I welded two supports accross the outside and will fibreglass the outside too.
