I started up my 2A today, 2.25 petrol, to turn it round for the next bit of welding. Easier than pushing a 3-pt turn up and down the curb I can tell you! And now I know the new water pump isn't leaking either.. :)

I had it running for about 5 minutes with a bit of revving and playing about. When I turned her off the temp gauge was sitting on the start of the red. I fit a new thermostat when I did the water pump last autumn.. if I was driving it down the road would it running cooler? What's normal? Anything to worry about or look into at this point?

It's normal water in it at the moment.. I didn't want to put coolant in until I knew the new water pump was not going to leak. I know coolant's a lower freezing point but don't know about the "hot" end..?

Water or coolant no difference, running a fan ? Could be you have an air lock in the system.

No electric fan, no.. Maybe air.. I filled it with water at the rad after fitting the new water pump and putting the rad back on.. I've done nothing in the way of bleeding trapped air..

Doesn't sound right to me. My 2.25 takes at least 1/2 mile of normal driving before the gauge starts moving and doesn't go above N even after idling for a while (mind you I have the 7-blade military fan, so maybe that makes a difference).
As tottot said, could well be an air lock...

Mine is a standard set up and always runs bang in the centre of the guage, idling or driving. If you drive, it will cool as air passes through (unless you're thrashing it up a hill!). I would suspect something is amiss if it's hurting the red. Is the timing okay?

There is a procedure for filling a series with coolant but I can't remember it and don't follow it anyway. The way I do it is; turn the heater control to hot, turn the engine on and pour the water/coolant into the rad slowly. Make sure it is parked on the level.

Did you back flush the rad and heater matrix ?

Did you flush the block with the drain tap open ?

Best just leave it till you can drive it properly.
Where is your temperature probe located , in engine block or thermostat housing.

Cheers all.. almost certainly air in the block. I will leave it for now.. I've started some welding again so have drained the fuel tank.

Personally, I've never done that. I am very careful around the tank however and if i was that closer, I'd probably take it off for ease of access.
An empty tank has more fumes than a full tank, it's the fumes that go bang.
Not telling you what to do, just what I do.
In my opinion, it's more important to disconnect the battery

Thanks, Kermit. Always happy to hear others' experience. I do disconnect the battery too. And the alternator.. which I know divides opinion a bit. But it's so easy to do, why not? And I just fit a new one.. :D

I've drained my rad today.. couldn't get anything out the drain tap on the block at any point. It tightens up again ok but when I undo it it sort of spins in place and nothing comes out..?

I put 2L in until it came to the top of the rad, then I undid the heater blank hose and a lot of air came out. Got 3-4 more litres in. Started her up, she idled on N. Got her hot with some revving and the thermostat opened so hopefully I'll get some more into her now when she's cooled down now everything's been opened up. Looks like it was just air last time as a total newbie I didn't think about that. By my reckoning it should take another 3ish litres as it's had 5-6 so far.. Cheers guys. :)

Did you flush it at all ?
