My discovery will run for a mile and then die so I have to switch off and perge the system and then it will start a bit smokey at first and then run for a mile and then the same thing happens. It had a fault code for the crankcase sensor so a new one was fitted but made no difference. Can anyone help ?

seems like a new fuel pump is needed...if you really speak about a Disco 2...cos this one doesnt have cranckcase sensor.... eventualy crankshaft position sensor but this one when fails gives you MIL warning and it doesnt start at all

yep pump is working i have got it fast idling on the drive and its smokey but running as soon as i go for a run it will stop after a mile

injector washers and seals would be the second call then... if you put a pressure gauge on the fuel system and you get 4 bar with pump running then nwhen you stop and leave the gauge there the pressure will slowly drop all the way down IMO that's your problem... what about oil at the ECU red plug?

I have just had the injector washers done 2 weeks ago and the red plug on the ecu is bone dry.I have just driven it and could hear the pump working fine then after1.6 miles the pump stopped.Switched off pumped the pedal 5 times did a purge then it started with no smoke and will last another 1.6 miles and do it again. The only thing I can put it down to is the fuel pump unless something else electronic is switching it off but the code reader my mechanic has says no.If I had hair I would pull it out!!! Thankyou for all your help so far I am fairly handy with a spanner but on a limited budget so the answers to my problems really help.

if your mechanic used a OBD2 code reader what he've got is false... D2 is not OBD2 compliant. if you want to have a proper reading find somebody with nanocom or hawkeye to do it... i hope your mechanic didnt charged you for replaceing the "crankase sensor" cos there isn't such thing on D2

by the way do you still have EGR fitted? ...cos if yes check it to not be clogged and when it opens it chokes off the air from inlet...usually it kicks in at 1 -2 miles after startup between 2-3000 rpm under load

it was a proper diagnostic machine for landrover thats all he works on he charged me £180 for diagnostic and crank sensor.I havent checked EGR but i will tomorow.Cheers

when you remove the inlet hose you can see if it's full of muck or not...and it must be closed, but you better remove it and see if the pipe which is coming from the exhaust isnt clogged..... you can go for a short ride with it removed to see if the symptom disapears or not, it wont happen anything in a few miles, just make sure you clog the vacuum pipe(or pipes if it's euro 3) otherwise u'll loose vacuum and brakes

You shouldn't hear the pump running when your driving under normal conditions. Heard mine twice, once when the injector copper washers failed allowing air into fuel system and the other time was when the air bleed valve at the fuel filter "vanished", reataining air in the fuel system. Even then it wasn't really the pump I heard but the air in the fuel system at the rear of the car passing through the filter. Needed to purge the system every time I started it but the Disco only failed regularly with injector problem, not the air bleed one.

dissconected the EGR and blanked it off and put a bulb on the fuel pump ander after 1.9 miles the bulb goes out and it stops ?

replace the fuel pump relay(R1) with a new one, or at least for check swap with R3(headlamp wash) ...in engine bay fusebox

tried all the relays just to make sure but no joy I just cant see what would be cutting the power to the pump.Would there be a failsafe in the ecu that would cut the power for some reason ?

Hmmmm,.... in your first post you said about crankase sensor which now it became clear that is about the crankshaft sensor...but i dont thing the sensor itself but the input to the ECU or something...see RAVE - engine management - description - CKP(crankshaft speed and position) sensor and if you are not good with electronics find somebody to investigate the whole cirsuit untill the ECU cos the gist of your problem seems to be that(from fuel delivery system - operation - RAVE):

"When the ignition switch is moved to position II, the fuel pump relay in the engine compartment fusebox is energised by the ECM. Battery voltage is supplied from the fuel pump relay to the fuel pump which operates. If engine cranking is not detected by the ECM within a three minute period, the ECM will 'time-out', de-energising the fuel pump relay. When the ignition is turned off the ECM timer will reset". ...... i think you do those 1.9miles in 3 minutes then

So IMO the ECM(engine ECU) doesnt receive the signal from CKP sensor, but only a part of the signal cos a total signal loss would not let the engine to start... it misses the speed signal only,.

That's a complicated issue... are you sure that the CKP sensor was replaced by that mechanic....cos if he said crankase sensor i have some doubts(i keep repeating this:rolleyes:)
