Just been watching a utube clip of a 200tdi running while ignition was off and keys where out, appartenly something to do with the turbo how does this happen and how do you stop it happening?

diesels are compression ingnition ,oil mist will burn like diesel if turbo fails and lets too much oil enter into intake system ,stall the vehicle

The old 12J and 19J engines used to be renowned for this, but this was due to higher than normal crankcase pressure forcing oil up the breather into the induction system.

Fortunately the cyclone breather design on the 200TDi remedied this, so it's just turbo failure that causes runaways on 200TDis and newer.

Any diesel can run away, I have had it happen here, a customer drove in with an Iveco that was overfilled, it went just as he pulled into the workshop, its an experience seeing your first one go in the flesh, we couldn't see anything for about half hour until the smoke cleared.

Worn turbos and over filled oil are the common causes, once they start you cant stop unless you cover the intake, not something you would want to do when its that close to blowing up, usually you just leave it to put a con rod out the block...

What about sticking it in 5th gear and letting the clutch go with brakes on to try and stall it?

I wouldn't like to be very close to mine if it did, I don't think I'd be able to think straight enough to be able to do something about it, Keep clear I would do...

I was in an iveco once travelling down the a303 we had that turbo go revs went mental and she went pop about ten seconds later not good fun I can tell you. No way could we have stallled that :p

Keep a CO2 fire extinguisher close to hand, if it goes point it straight into the air intake! It should put the fire out so to speak:)

It would be going full whack so its gonna just burn yah clutch out I would expect...

Yes there is this, its a good way to stop it although trying to find the intake in that much smoke is not easy, my workshop is a big workshop and we couldn't see 2 feet in front of us, it was just dark and smokey, we ended up outside taking bets how long till it blew up, surprisingly it went quite a long time, a good 5 mins or so...

ive heard it just rips the middle out.
be better to catch it early, if you know the signs of whats happening.
fortunately, never expereinced it in the flash. happened to a mate tho during a test drive from a garage! beleive that one ran outa oil before exploding, just got slower until it seized.

happened to a mate of mine and he jumped out and ran out the way, after he put some more oil in and started it up it ran ok so he changed the turbo and sold the car but it seamed ok.

I have been in a couple of cars that have done it and the smoke is unbelievable quite scary at the time

oil running down the downpipe I've heard is the diagnosis

ive had a mondeo td do this on me the only thing you can do to stop it is completeley block the turbo air intake or absolutely swamp the fekker with a co2 fire extinguisher as whats really happening is the turbo has got too much oil in the compression chamber and ignited totaly unbound and feeding off the engine oil through its bearing oil feed it takes off like a jet engine dragging the main engine with it at a mental pace

heres a little vid that shows the old geezer has seen this a few times over his career
