Hi guys, was hoping someone could shed some light on this for me?

Basically, I wanna know how long the Rover V8 motors tend to live for!? I have heard that people have had them fwith over 170k on them and they still go strong, give or take a gasket change or two.

The Range I plan to take over from my Dad is a 4.6 with 91k on it and runs on LPG and Petrol. I heard LPG is less harsh on the engine internals and therefore can improve life span - is this true to any degree?

I'd have though I need a new timing belt/chain - need to check.

Any info would be great.

V8 is chain driven.

mines on 160k

the main thing is regular oil and antifreeze changes as the ally block and head dont like getting hot.
 
I was told that at about 130-140k you should be looking at needing new cam etc, but I have seen a lot on much higher mileage, although iv no idea what they've had done. Hopefully it's true that with good maintanence they can do decent mileage.

I'll go with that, I got a 1992 3.5 EFI Disco with 132,000 miles on the clock, and its about to get a Cam change, runs flat and wont rev, and me LPG dont work so kinda expensive the mo, but hoping thats down to the cam being knakcered! That said, I blooming love it and certainly dont wana be with out her!! Even if all my doozil loving mates larf at me when I go through a puddle spend the next ten minutes dorwning the bastard with WD40!:doh: Lol!
 
gas will casue plenty of problems on the p38a get it serviced and checked once a year or you will be looking at engine work
cams last for around 70K -80k is usualy the life span of the cam in a rover v8
i would invest in having the irontite sealer done now and it mite save the block

LPG is actually harsher on the engine due to it burning at a hotter temperature - keep the cooling system serviced and a colder plug than the 'book standard' as that will help remove some of the combustion heat.

245,000 miles or there abouts was the last disco - was still running strong when it left us :eek:!!
 
My daily driver RRC 3.9Efi petrol only has over 250,000 miles on it. looked after and running lovely.
My previous RRC daily driver had less than 80,000 miles on it. It was a dog, the first service I did on it looked like the first it had since it was new...it was still a dog when I got rid.
 
My Dad has just had it serviced in January and a new MAF sensor put on, and everything was ok so hopefully it shouldn't have any issues for a while.

I did start to think LPG would be harsher when I read in another post that it burned hotter. I heard LPG is rated at something like 110 Octane?
 
Don't know the miles on my engine but it came out of a 1965 rover p6 originaly so probably been to the moon and back! Put a cam kit on it last year but apart from that it s been fine, not bad for a 46 year old engine.
