Hi everyone. I've searched around a little bit, but I'm still in a bit of a quandary!

I need to get some roof bars to chuck a ladder on the roof (with ladder clamps), but in the near future, we want to get a roof tent, pretty much set on a hardshell Maggiolina.

The suppliers of said roof tent (boab 4x4, or something like that) have quoted a fairly steep price for a set of bars that will take the tent.

Does, or has anyone had any personal experience with hd roof bars, and what make and where did you get them? Many thanks! J

No recommendations then? Maybe ill just go for some cheapo ones just to take the ladders for now

ive got a pair of gutter mounted 2inch square box ,from famous four a few years back they very strong, but i dont know what make till i look

Thanks James, ill have s look on their website. As soon as you add "to take roof tent", the price seems to quadruple!

Ebay item 291080449014. I got a set a few years ago, very heavy duty - but you would need to check with the supplier that they would be ok for your tent. Mine have had some pretty heavy loads of timber on, I reckon the roof would cave in before the bars reached their limit.

Mantec roof bars are ace. I've got 5 on my 110 and they have a roof tent and storage box with no problems at all. There's loads of pre drilled mounting holes too.

That's a cracking post bud, exactly what I needed to hear! Cheers bud :)

I've got some Mantec ones. Very light so easy to put on single handed. Not the cheapest, but in my case they've carried loads of wood for my various shed improvement projects over the last couple of years. I don't know whether they'd be compatible with the roof tent you are intending to buy. When you drive around with them unladen they play a tune as the wind blows over the holes, which was quite disturbing when it first happened. I thought I'd lost a wheel bearing. Fortunately, as they're just bars rather than a full roof rack they can be taken off and chucked in the back when not laden. The only criticism I have is that the clamps tend to chew up the paint on the gutters, so it's difficult to keep your pride and joy looking pristine.

The wind noise is because the front bar is too far forward. Move it an inch back and it'll be silent.

I tend to put mine as close to the ends of the roof as I can, because I'm often shifting long lengths of wood. 4.8 metres seems to be a fairly standard length from the timber merchants, and my longest ladder is nearly 5 metres. It's quiet when it's loaded. I suppose if one were using a roof tent the front bar could be a bit further back.
