I want to fit a roll cage to my Series IIA 88”. I’ve rolled one of these on the road, so I know how weak the roof is!
2 Questions:

  • Can I make a roll bar that will fit inside the hardtop, in winter, AND work OK with the ragtop in summer, or is that asking too much? If I made hoops that fit inside the hardtop and then put pipe insulating foam on the hoops would that give me a tight canvas? Anyone tried it?
  • The tub isn’t really strong enough to support a roll hoop, but bending the bar in and taking it down to the tub floor to bolt through to the chassis looks messy to me. I wonder if I can cut holes in the corners of the tub benching, and mount the hoop to the rear X member at the back, and onto an outrigger planted on the chassis at the ‘B’ post? Anyone tried this?

The problem is that the outriggers behind the rear seats and the outer tips of the rear cross member are not very strong, but I suppose they could be strengthened.

If you intend on rolling an 88 then get an MSA approved cage it will be strong enough and will open up options for you to take part in more comps if you wanted to. You can make your own legal one or just a hoop but I would see making a non Competition legal cage as a pointless exercise. For legal and proved strong cages Check out:

This will give you some ideas on how to mount the cage.
