Hi All

Been doing insurance quotes over the last few days for various models of Defender 90s, just to see what model is going to be best for me.

Weirdly for me, the Hardtop 90 Vans are far more expensive insurance than a Station Wagon. Around £800 to £1000 a year for a 90 Hardtop Van, compared to about £200 to £300 a year for a factory County Station Wagon. I am not really sure why? I was actually expecting the van with no seats in the rear to be the one dirt cheap on insurance, instead of the SW.

I even called Adrian Flux and they wanted £1300 on a 2004 TD5 90 Hardtop Van. I don't really understand why the prices for the van and SW are massively different, its Baffling?

Another thing is I'll see a 90 for sale, clearly a station wagon with all the seats and windows in the rear, but then reg check on compare-the-market and confused.com keeps telling me it's actually a commercial vehicle/van.

Is the category allowed to be changed? To me if the seats have been added into the back its surely a Station Wagon now and not a commercial vehicle anymore?

Road tax is the most confusing though. I'd really appreciate if someone could break it down for me, as unfortunately there is just nothing online that is up-to-date anymore, giving an accurate pricing breakdown. Everything seems to be quite a few years old now.

It would be really nice to know roughly the road tax prices for...

  • 300TDI County Station Wagon
  • 300TDI Hardtop van
  • TD5 County Station Wagon
  • TD5 Hardtop van.

Commercial vehicle ie Van can still warrant VAT pending on age when sold Also by it nature this is not for passenger carrying only goods or equipment. Station Wagon and Country Station Wagon are passenger carrying but another proviso is the Station Wagon can act as a Commercial. A few CV ie Vans have been adapted to SW or CSW as the bodywork is the same for alteration in the factory. On the V5 form this has to be declared for usage as modification. Insurance check what the vehicle description is from leaving the factory and accord the insurance based on this. ANY alterations effecting road usage is a modification and will effect the quotation limits or boundary limits with the regulations. You see a SW or CSW but it registered as a Van and therefore the seller has been untruthful in or omitted in selling and fall foul of insurance not informing of modification. Road Tax now is Vehicle Emission Duty. which charges for the Exhaust gas recorded from release of Engine as was in the factory regulation for the type of engine. Run out of puff.

The only way to find this information is if I had the V5 document to hand along with the reg so I could search on the DVLA. Which is quite difficult as I am still searching for one to buy.

I'd appreciate if someone could give some advice on rough numbers? I am expecting around £250 to £320 a year, but this is using old figures seen online from a few years ago.

I am only interested in 300TDI and TD5 as they are the ones in my price range.

Iirc pre 2001 there is only two tax groups, most expensive is 290 quid?
2001 on is when all the emissions carp started, defenders can be real strange tax wise, I would contact @lightning on here as I think he has two td5 models.

1998 300tdi 90 CSW £290 12Mths/ £154 6Mths
 
My 1987 90 Van just cost £294 for 12 months (Officially a 19j turbo engine - similar to a 200tdi) and I say just as I taxed it today :)
 
The DVLA site tells you all you need to know with regards to cost of road tax. It's entirely dependent on the age of the vehicle and the engine size. Go look it up instead of getting people on here to do it for you, it's freely available and easy to find

Defenders are a nightmare though, so many different tax categories
lt only got simpler after 2011 when all Defenders manufactured after then were classified as "commercial"

And don't start on the London ULEZ
Try and find out if yours is exempt !
