Hi, I bought an (86) 90 on Saturday which has Terrafirma long travel shocks with springs. It has rock sliders on and the stretch to get in is huge (I am 6ft). It looks to me that this is bigger than a 2" lift and I was wonder if it is possible to reduce the height, got a feeling it will be new springs (and shocks?).

It has mud tyres on and the steering is vague at best (think there is some play in the box). I like the wheels and tyres and would like to stick with them but I don't want to fight it on the road. Would really appreciate any views and experience (pic attached), thanks

With those wheels/tyres on standard suspension they will catch the wings/tub, they look barely legal, or mayby not with regards to the cover over the wheel. It is usual to have extended eyebrows. As is usual such set ups are not that good on the road. Look nice though. Check out other steering issue posts on here for more info. My feeling it is a 2" lift.

Thank you, I am not quite sure how it made it through an MOT with those arches, think I might go for wider. Not getting any rubbing so far. So maybe I could fit aside steps for access, the wife can’t get in!

Looks similar ht to ours at +2.
In your avatar pic it looks like the fronts stick out further than the backs? is it an optical delusion. do you have spacers fitted?

Maybe the PO used a different set of wheels for the mot like the spare ;)

If you had LR single type steps they hang down a bit more than what you have now so doesn't make it such a step.

Optical illusion, not sure about spacers as I haven’t taken the wheels off yet. Will do when the weather is better. Think I might stick some steps on based on your thoughts, thank you

Just change the springs and shocks, you can get OE "take off" for next to nothing from Twisted.
Or fit a set of aftermarket standard specification springs and OE dampers.
The Land Rover OE dampers are so cheap that it's barely worth going aftermarket.

You will find that the road holding/handling is improved and unless you want to thrash it round a pay and play site every weekend the OE suspension will be fine.

Not sure about the wheels, you may need to change those as well, but you can get a good used set of standard fitment steel rims with tyres for £2-300 and the existing wheels/tyres will probably sell for more than that if you don't want them.

I’d definitely return it to standard height. A set of wolf steel wheels and some decent AT tyres would set it off nicely. The wider wheels will sell well as there are lots who like the look, likewise with the suspension set-up. The standard height suspension will be much better to drive with and won’t feel like a jelly on corners!

Just my own opinion, but I haven't found vehicles with tyres that wide on them drive very nicely.

The steering and suspension on that was designed to work with 7.50R16 tyres, and the further you go from that, the more likely it is that the way it drives will be worse.
 
does it? I am not sure that the case with the Morden space savers the restriction is the speed if used.

Not best practice in a permanent 4x4 I admit.

I have never seen space savers on a Landrover, but I have seem them on cars, and they were the same diameter as standard wheels, although much thinner.
As you say, they are limited to 50mph.

My understanding is a space saver is for use in an emergency, where a full size spare is just another wheel and can be used permanently, therefore needs to meet the same rules ie same size per axle, no mixing ratings etc
