I've got a Defender 19j. When stuck in slow moving traffic for a long time, I first get a smell of dielsel and then when I pull off with very little throttle, the revs go through the roof until it reaches max then dies back to tick over. If I leave a gap in front of me an accelerate hard to catch the car in front, it seems to clear it. Anyone any ideas?

sounds like overfuelling but as its a td whip off the turbo intake pipe and check impellar for play, may be very worn and over fuelling with oil when ticking over under no load

also see if oil in intake pipe.. tds are very heavy breathers and crap engines when worn

cheers steve

Like he says you should check it a.s.a.p these engines are prone to serious runaway.Filthy, oily air filter is a bad sign!

Yep, get it checked and sorted, if you do get a runaway, which by the sounds of it it wont be long :O - you'll be fooked
