Yesterday I was plodding along minding my own business when I suddenly heard a loud rattle beneath my feet. I popped under the vehicle and found a short length of wire wrapped around the propshaft. The vehicle is a 1989 90 fitted with 300tdi and r380 (retaining the original wiring loom). It transpired that the wire was the one connected to the reverse light switch. It was a 2-core within a black sheath. What is perplexing me is the fact that both colours are the same (green with a brown or purple trace). Are both these wires connected to the reverse light switch? If not, I presume that one core is connected to the switch (the switch being earthed via the gearbox) and the other? Right now I can see two stripped strands when i look into the engine bay from underneath.

one of the wires is a live feed the other goes to the rev light, its earthed at the light end

Thanks James. At this point i need to find out where the other end of the second wire goes then.

both should go to the front of bulk head were one joins loom to the rear and the other picks up a live feed

Understood James. Thanks. That's what I meant. I need to trace the loom to the rear. The ends on the front of the bulkhead are visible.
