Rev counter works sometimes, other times it bounces up and down, sometimes it just sits there so what does this mean and how can I fix it.

check your alternator, and belt, the revs are taken from there (terminal W)assuming it is a TDI not sure about the petrol ones

300Tdi it is, so would that be the small wire?

You would have to check what terminal it is connected to but at a gues it would be a small one.
