Hello all,

I know there are 100's of threads about restricted performance but I can't find one that describes exactly what I have.

I have a 2010, RRS 3.0 Diesel (L320, Auto)

It has just had its alternator and battery changed.

Driving along just fine and all of a sudden the restricted performance light comes on. Shortly after this the low coolant level light comes on.

I was only a few miles from home so carefully limped back and left it over night. Now when I start it, the low coolant light is there all the time, however the restricted performance light goes away, you can drive it another 20 miles or 20 mins then the light comes back. It doesn't restrict me to a low speed (I can still do 70 down the motorway, its just got higher revs than normal) I seem to have lost maybe 3 to 4 MPG on fuel economy and the acceleration had completely disappeared below 2000 revs and its slow above that.

If I pull over, put it in neutral and give it a few revs, you hear a very clear sucking/whooshing sound when lifting off the gas, there is also (and only sometimes) a very rhythmic clicking, then it goes away.

Whilst accelerating you can a slight whistle coming from the engine bay.

I have someone coming in two days with a code reader however I think it is a generic one and I'm sure it with through out incomplete codes.

I know a cracked manifold or bad MAF can caused the restricted performance (along with a load of other things) I am wondering if anyone has any idea what this might point to.

Unfortunately I don't know if the low coolant is linked to this or not, I know the sensor in the bottles fails regularly as it's happened in both my past LR3s, so could be as simple as that as there is plenty of coolant in there.

Any help appreciated.

No coolant leak at all does the clicking happen when acceleration could be head gasket whooshing sound may be turbo pipe I’ve it’s got turbo fitted somebody will be along soon to diagnose your post soon that’s much more knowledgeable than me hopefully put you right because they have had symptoms before

Thank you! There's certainly no notable coolant leak, I have been keeping an eye on it and it really hasn't moved.

The only thing I would say is when looking under the bonnet with the engine running, I am not convinced the coolant is pumping, seems to be no action... which would obviously be the water pump, however I don't know how much it actually pumps when idle and I am sure it doesn't cause all the other noises?

No clicking when driving as far a I can hear, but may be muffled by engine sound, it is a very quiet click anyway.

I have been under the vehicle where the alternator change was and I can't see any pipes that are loose or disconnected.
 
Turbo hose split or loose after the work maybe. Check the battery voltage first with the engine off then with the engine running, should see 14.7 volts or more with the engine running. As the alternator and battery have been changed, there maybe a bad connection or even a duff replacement alternator, not unknown.
 
Only just got round to looking at this today...

Had one error code, weirdly the reader I had didn't actually give a code but it said it was a MAP error.

The sound is coming from beneath the black plastic bit, just in front of the fan and behind the radiator/intercooler.

I have checked all the intercooler pipes as much as I can, can't find an issue with them.

Could a broken intercooler itself cause these issues without any black smoke. I know it reduces performance and MPG but I would have thought I would see something out of the exhaust.. am I wrong? I just want to try and narrow it down before taking the bumper off etc.

Whilst writing I realised I should have taken a photo/video of where the sound is from, I will post one tomorrow.
 
A map error code could be the result of a pressure drop due to a leak after the turbo. Can the bonnet slam panel not be removed before the bumper? ;)

The location of the sound would say this isn't very likely, unless leaks can sound like they are coming from a very different location?
 
When fitting the new battery and alternator, have they disturbed the intake hoses after the MAF Sensor and not put them back with a good seal? (Loosened off a clamp to move the hose over, forgotten to tighten it back up properly)
If additional air gets in after the MAF Sensor, engines start behaving very strangely.

Yes!

It looks like, he disconnected the passenger side air intake but didn't realised there was the small pressure release hose on the bottom. After spraying a small amount of water/washing up liquid mix onto the hose, the small crack that had formed became very clear. It was on the back of the little offshoot on the bottom on the main hose and basically invisible to the naked eye.

Have fixed it up temporarily with some glue to confirm, all seems absolutely fine now. Will order new hose.

Amazing how such a small crack causing such massive issues.

I don't think I'd have believed the difference it can make had I not been a car which first killed the power steering, then stalled and sounded like a bag of spanners when restarted, because the hose from airbox to intake manifold (on the engine side of the MAF) was slightly loose. Tightened it up and it was fine again. Surreal experience!
