OK, I need to do this tonight, but the top mounting bolt on the starter motor looks a complete pig to get to! Anyone got any helpful hints and tips on removal and refitting a new one?

Cheers! :)

Sorry it's a bit late but it's dead easy, just need the correct length of extension to clear the exhaust/starter.

As above...knuckles can take a pounding...i loosen it with normal spanner then just long ext and long socket...easy enough 15 mon job

Sounds like they go quite often!! I got a garage to do it in the end, only because the bolts were so tight you needed a lift to get the leverage. Took two of them and a 3ft extension bar to crack those bolts off!!

Thought it was 8mm head sized (or thereabouts) allen headed bolts not hex head bolts for 3.9 starters, due to clearance issues at the starter face?!!

Glad you got it sorted.

Yep, it is an 8mm but an allen key type head on mine....?
yep, thats what I said.
Allen head = Allen key type head. Hex head = conventional bolt head you might use a socket or spanner on
From the previous posts it read as though folk were talking about the later, not the former.

They did well not to shear them off when they were hanging off their extension bar too
