If it is dry this weekend, I'm planning to take one of the door panels off to temporarily fix a dodgy speaker, but I will be replacing them all in a couple of weeks time anyway when I get my new head unit.

Does anyone know the maximum mounting depth for Freelander 1 door speakers? I'm hoping to use Vibe Blackair 6 as replacements, and these have a mounting depth of 65mm.

If these foul the windows when fitted in place of the originals onto the metalwork, I think I'll fit some dynamat to the back of the door cards, then surface mount the speakers to this.

I've looked round the forums but not been able to find this mounting depth info, but I'll keep you posted on my progress!

I am doing this at the moment with Vibe 5 inch at the front and 5 inch Infinity ref. at the rear. I have used some closed cell foam as a gasket and mounted the speaker onto a 3mm MDF bracket I made to replicate the original holder. bearing in mind this is only a 5 inch speaker I now have to take the door apart again in order to space the speaker out some more. It is is just about ok now for the windows going up and down (although you can hear a slight strike as the window goes down) The problem is more noticable when the windows are down and you shut the door. The door makes a horrible noise of glass hitting speaker. This I now know is why there is foam on the back of some of my original speakers. This is to prevent to some extent the problem I have described. Very Heath Robinson of LR! I may just make another gasket and copy LR and put a foam pad on the back of the speaker and see how that goes.

I have done a few modes to the sound in my hippo I fitted a Memphis Reference Amplifier bridged running a JL Audio 6 inch sub with the remaining channels running the standard mid bass units and Rockford tweeters. I was going to change the midbass units using rockford splits in front with Rockford triax`s at the rear however I gave up on this idea as the I dont want to cut the car at all. I must say the standard midbass units are not bad if they have not bean over worked. The sub is located under the seat. Any I am using a Sony headunit.

Well, I removed the speaker (drivers door), and it ain't working, and probably never will again, but not to worry, they're all getting replaced in a couple of weeks anyway!

Whilst I had the door card off, and the speaker removed, it let me check the mounting depth available, so here you go.

To mount on the metalwork in place of the original, your maximum depth to miss the window is only 50mm.

To surface mount on the re-fitted door card however, this increases to 75mm.

Good! I can still go for the Vibe Blackair 6 components then, best get the wife to order them in time for fathers day!
