I've stripped down my rear door on my 1996 90 to replace the rear barrel. I've removed the lock and pushing a small screw driver into the hole with a key in the lock to release the lock barrel. It's not the actual key for the lock as I don't have it.

I'm unable to release the barrel. It looks like the little brass knob you need to depress is on the opposite side of the lock. As I don't have the key I can't turn it the 180 degrees to expose it. I hope you are with me?


Can anyone help?
 
I take it that this is not on a push-button release?

I had to drill mine out, so that the thingies dropped down, and it was simple to remove from that point on.
 
Drill through where the key goes in. If it's a double sided key all the better as you use the middle as a guide

If memory serves correctly it's a 10mm drill, which releases the catches that the key would push up when it's inserted.

Be careful you don't go too far in, because you need to be able to get a screwdriver located in the slot at the bottom of the hole to turn it.

Also be aware that you will be cutting through bits of springs, so use a good quality drill bit.
 
I'm having some similar issues with my 1998 110 rear door - bloody thing wont lock, but sometimes (generally after I've humped / dumped all the rear load space contents!) after a drive it sort of vibrates / jolts it's self locked...

Well - I was thinking about a lock upgrade? think I heard some where that overlanders fit superior stainless or hardened steel barrels / locks???

Really, I love the old Landie and want a 'fit n forget' (or as close as.... ) soloution.

Any one got any ideas? appreciated.
 
I tried to drill out the lock as suggested yesterday but unfortunately the bottom part of the lock sheared off. Whilst the lock now turns it’s still not exposing the little brass button you need to press to release the remains of the barrel.

I suspect I’m going to need to buy a new lock
 
Sorry, I was under the impression that you were changing the lock and had a replacement ready to fit!

The brass button should be visible when you turn the barrel 90 degrees.
 
No, i was just want to fit a new barrel to the existing lock. even after drilling the lock I'be not been able to turn the barrel to show the brass button. anyway, I've ordered a new lock today:mad:
