I own a 1988 110 2.5 td , I recently replaced the 19j block and head for reconditioned units I bought on eBay , the mechanic has installed the units and the car runs and sounds fine , just really is gutless , it’s even worse than the old engine ! On its first run out after the swop it snapped a rocker , which the mechanic couldn’t come up with a reason for it happening, just replaced it with one from the old head .
He suggested maybe the turbo could do with replacing ?
It’s still early days as I only got it back from him yesterday.
Any views or advise on the subject would be appreciated.

If it snapped a rocker and has just been 'reconditioned' it sounds like the cam timing is out. I would also check the pushrod as that could be bent too.
 
Sounds like a timing issue to me. Check the cam and fuel injection pump are correct. Also check the physical position of the injector pump- there's some degree of adjustment by rotating the pump on its axis, which will alter the injection timing.
 
Find someone who knows old diesels- as engines go they're fairly basic really but if you go at it ham-fisted and not really knowing what you're doing then you will end up causing more issues than you solve. Like snapping a rocker (and possibly bending pushrods) due to incorrect timing.
