my handbrake got stuck on the other day and after hours of lying under it in town with a river flowing down the back, many solid whacks with a lump hammer and an RAC guy looking at it, it still wouldn't budge. we took the prop shaft off so we could tow it away but i'm now faced with the problem of... if i cant get the front of the drum off for whatever reason, is it possible to remove the whole unit any other way?
i'm going to replace it with an Xeng disc brake anyway so the whole lot needs to come off

any help would be greatly appreciated!

cheers

Have yu tried braying the linkage? you can't take the whole lot off untill the drum is off. so pound away. also don't forget the 2 retaining screws behind the propshaft flange.

have you slackened off the adjuster at the back along with the main operating rod ?

 doubt it,

more to the point, yer lucky to get it to stick, ther a total waste of time most of the time, yer can pull mine wile yer drivin and nawt happens,

you won the lottery then?

ya seen the price of the x brake:eek:

nowt wrong with a dependers tranny brake, it's just a bit of a pain to adjust

isn't so much fun having to clean it out after every trip through wet sandy/silty stuff

Are you going to let the garage fix it George or have a go yourself?

If you're going to have a go yourself, I will come round and lend a hand.

Had the same problem with mine when I bought it ( the expanders where **** right up ) took me and my m8 a while to get it off .
Chock your wheels , remove the clevis pin from the rod going into the expander , give it a bit of a tap back into the drum more like it'll be sloppy as hell .

De-adjust the shoes ( wind it out ) - remove the drum retaining bolts/screws , beat the hell out of it with a coppa malet , more so on the expander cable side to try and shift the shoes across a bit then leaver bars and more beating with the hammer .

once you got it off , remove the shoes then remover the expander retaining clips ( bloody hate these !! , like 3 Cs oposite each other with the 3rd as the locker ) .
you can either try and clean up the old expander or bin it and buy a new one , its up to you :D .
