hi

Have remapped my defender td5 with dynachip and deegr'd it and decatted it. Massive improvement in every way but I might have an issue. I have noticed that there is a hot sort of burning smell under the bonnet that you can smell in the cabin now and again, particularly when towing. It may be a leak at one of the exhaust joins but me and my pal had a look the other day and couldn't find anything. It now also has a tendency to set my left rear mudflap on fire particularly when towing heavy loads long distances, maybe this could be the source of the problem but not sure.

If td5's are modified like mine is this something that just happens and if so is there an issue here like it's running too hot or could it be that I have a leak somewhere in the exhaust system?

Would anyone advise fitting an upgraded intercooler if hot exhaust temps are an issue?

If towing is involved you should fit coolant temp and EGT gauges to be on the safe side, especially if you have bigger than std dimension tyres, those temps are very important to be monitored on a Td5... before i remapped mine i used a power box and i thought it's running well then after a while fitted the gauges and i had a shock seing EGT up to 900 under heavy load and coolant temp 115... (the dash gauge stays at the middle up to 120 so you can drive it at 115 much without even knowing it) ... cost me a new AMC head as the old one cracked and i got a proper remap so now all the temps are within decent limits... to fit a coolant temp sensor is easy, no adaptor is needed, remove the elbow and tap the proper thread in it(usually 1/8npt), i fitted the EGT probe into the EGR blanking plate which is not the best setup just the easy one but if some problem occurs the EGT will be higher there too, without these gauges you'll not know how the engine works untill it's too late

Would a stage 2 with performance intercooler produce lower EGT than a standard remap?
I'm considering getting one done, just wondering is stage 2 is the way to go

Who said that a standard remap produces high EGT? ... as long as it's not monitored you'll never know so better fit the gauge then think to further tuning cos if it's some engine or management issue present no remap or intercoolerr will fix it

If you lower the manifold temperature with a bigger intercooler then the charge air density will be higher which should give you higher performance, but that will probably bring even higher exhaust temperature.

Exhaust down pipe flexi joint leaking very common... Exhaust manifold warped very common... Both are strong possibilitys

I'm not sure this should be happening! Is there any white smoke when you boot it at low RPM while the turbo catches up, or black smoke at higher RPM?

I had my TD5 remapped by Dasall (Alive agent in Cheshire) and it chucked out clouds of white smoke at lower RPM which turned out to be unburnt fuel.
lf this has ignited it could have set the mudflap on fire! (Although on a 110 the exhaust exits to the rear)

I couldn't get it sorted by the Alive agent and had to get it reset at Land Rover.
After that l missed the extra performance, so got Dynachip in.
He remapped it but it was over fuelling, he had to turn down the remap twice before it was OK.
The guy is very good. Tell him what's happening he will most likely come back and have a look at it for you.

Yeah I can see the logic to this as I will find out if I have a problem.

No white smoke. Sometimes get a bit of black smoke in higher gears before turbo fully kicks in but just figured this was a bit of unburnt diesel as Issued to have a remapped golf diesel that smoked like hell under full throttle.

Can you show a photo of the left rear mudflap and how it caught on fire please?

Cheers[/

Have a video on iPhone but can’t get it to upload because it says it is the wrong type of file. Pulled over because of burning smell, van behind me thought it was them on fire! Seems cow **** burns quite well when hot.

it could be an injector issue its not un common for a diesel to throw flames on a stuck open injector and EGT gauge in the correct place will work

here is an example not a Td5 but still a diesel engine
