Thinking and Toying with the remap scenario.
I have seen plenty of plug in/order over the internet types.
Also i have researched the prospect of bespoke remapping and have been quoted £649.99.
Seems a bit cheeky IMO any thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

have you tried dynachip he is a 1 man band with a lappy and everything ells he needs to do the job, he is based in the north west and is mobile and travels all over the country and will travel into europe if there is enough peps interested and he races landys aswell, and he only charges £225, once i have sorted the coolant problem out on mine i will be using him, peps on the land rover uk forum swear by him.

I have an appointment with Mike of Dynachip next tuesday afternoon with my 2002 TD5 auto. £225 including full diagnostic check before doing the remap.

My mate had his done by the same guy - his Disco has oversized wheels and tyres and even taking that into account his now drives just great. Loads of torque from about 1700rpm, smoother power delivery etc etc.

Why anyone would pay £600+ for just a remap is beyond my comprehension - just daft !!!

had my 110 done at DYNACHIP, Its the older ecu non flashable so he soldered in a new chip and still only cost £250 including his travelling time and fuel.

And just because I'm waiting/at a loose end, can you tell me what improvements YOU noticed, please.

It's just because I can't wait til tuesday to get mine done so I'm looking for reassurance - how sad is that?:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

You could use any of the following words in your analysis:

"gorgeous, fantastic, superb, best money I've ever spent, transformed my Defender, tremendous improvement, night & day difference............................."

Dave I had mine done about a month or so ago by dynachip. He takes the old chip off and solders a socket to the board (if its a pre NNN ecu) and then puts the new map chip in the socket, you could if you wanted to just plug the old chip back into the socket and it would be standard again...... you wont want to!!!

so after a month, there is still a bit of a flat spot as you pull away if you dont get the revs high enough but its much less than it was. From then on its smooth and powerful, it goes everywhere in 4th and 5th and makes for much more relaxed driving. and overtaking at any speed is a breeze.
I went for this type of tune rather than a big block of power type but the beauty is if you want to change it in the future for something more aggressive Mike will just mail you a new chip

As for fuel consumption, to be honest I dont know I think its about 3-4mpg better, im getting about 34mpg but the problem is you cant help giving it a blast and I havent got over the fun yet to do a serious fuel check

best

Me likey !!!!!!!

Only 4 days to go - fingers tapping the table...............................

Hi

I was thinking of getting this done as well BUT i keep hearing people say that it can blow the cylinder head?? Or is this just if you go for the max power increase?

Anyone had this issue?

Brian

On TD5 engines that have been re-mapped the usual problem -when there is one - is an issue of snapping exhaust manifold studs due to warpage of the manifold.

I suspect this issue occurs when the owner fully utilises the extra performance, without appropriate maintenance.

People will often talk about head gasket problems and TD5, but these are not directly related to remapping, rather more in relation to:

1. Plastic dowels to locate the head allowing movement;
2. Mixing multiple types of coolant;
3. Cooling system problems such as faulty radiators and coolant leaks.

On TD5 engines that have been re-mapped the usual problem -when there is one - is an issue of snapping exhaust manifold studs due to warpage of the manifold.

that's also an issue on standard TD5s - solved by cutting away the webbing on the casting to allow a little more flex

Mike did my 02 TD5 D2, great result.

Better MPG, no flat spot running up the gears and best of all if you need to put your foot down it really goes.

Turned my truck into a car!

Td5alive also sell a powdercoated manifold that is supposed to eliminate flex, but I haven't quite got my head around how that works...

Sorry if im hijacking the thread a little but im tempted now that there is not a head blowing issue as such.

Are there different types of map?? Ie max power or better fuel economy What would i be looking for if i wanted better acceleration, not bothered about all out speed...it is a landy and not meant for that BUT better acceleration would make it a bit less hairy pulling out at junctions and overtaking.

Hi Brian, I think it fair to say that most TD5 engine tuners recognise that the biggest single problem is low speed torque delievery ie between 1700 and about 2800 rpm. As such this is where performance improvement is focussed. It's definitely not about big bhp figures.

From what you say you are looking for more torque. Lets be honest we are trying get 2200kgs of steel moving - that takes torque not bhp.

However it is quite easy to get your head around £325 + vat for one of them !!!!!!!!

My understanding is that if you wish to avoid this manifold warping problem, all you need to do is to cut the webs on the manifold with an angle grinder.

The remap truely transforms the TD5 Discovery.

Its really one of those things you can only experience.
I found, as it seems most other post map TD5 owners do, the difference is unbelievable.

As I said before, if your going to do one mod to your car, do the remap !!.
