Hi guys

I have a quick one today ..

Where is the best part to attach a strop for a snatch recovery, I’m guessing not my tow bar ....

I do have the smaller round tow eye fitted direct to the chassis I’m guessing this would be better ??

What’s best ... ??

Use some proper off road recovery points, the small round eye is for on road towing and not upto the stresses a snatch recovery exerts. Also use a snatch rope for snatching as it has some stretch in it and uses stored kinetic energy to move the vehicle. A none kinetic strop is brutal for snatching.

Have a dynamic rope for recovery

For the rear what’s recommend?

On the front I have recovery points on my steering guard ..

Why not your tow bar???? Is there something wrong with it?

the lashing eye is a dangerous place to use for recovery. Do not use.

My tow bar is fine , I use it with a bike trailer all the time

I just didn’t think it was rated , strong enough for using to do a snatch ? I might be wrong ???

What is the ball rated too? And how is it affixed? It should be more than fine for any sort of sensible recovery. Including snatch. The latter does not mean driving like a complete knobber however. Kinetic ropes are far kinder to recovery points than non kinetic. If you need to snatch so hard you run the risk of damaging a strong towing point. Then common sense would suggest a different recovery technique is required.

Tow balls are commonly used recovery points for MSUK authorised off road competitions in the UK. Sometimes modified, but not always.

So they should be more than enough for any form of sensible recovery use. Provided they are fitted correctly for their use and rated accordingly.

Best bet is to meet up with some local peeps, when this madness abates abit, and learn the different techniques for differing terrain and weather ...

Learn what to use when and how to use it safely ... You Toob is no substitute for a hands on tutorial ...

Which is why I advised the op to use proper off road recovery points and not the tow bar like you did!!
As said. If it’s good enough for motorsport, which is highly red tape and safety obsessed. Surely it should be fine for enthusiast use also.

Pretty much all of these use tow balls front and rear for recovery points.

Seriously ?

You Toob is full of peeps who have made bad choices with their towballs ...

It is just as much to do with the person you are asking to recover you. Do you trust them?

Cheers

... I seemed to have opened a can of worms ..

Dont have much in the way of recovery gear atm , but im adverse in winching and direction pulls .. and so on , use that at work ( im a specialist rescue technician for the brigade ) ..

I am about to order some strops , and a few other bits , and about to fit a winch ..

It was where to snatch from which had got me , Im sure I had read on a few places not to snatch from the tow ball of types .. my tow ball has a bike rack adaptor fitted to it and is one of those adjustable height ones , so im unsure if snatching from there would be wise .. I do like the idea of snatching from a J rings direct to the chassis as mentioned above as it seems like the better choice ..
