As i'm starting to enjoy greenlaning and soon off-roading, i've been thinking of some additions to the Defender.

Research suggests this steering guard from Rebel4x4 is good value for money

I assume JATE rings are not suitable/required, with such a guard, and therefore these shackles are more appropriate:

As for rope, I was thinking of getting these 2:

and

Are 3.25 tonne shackles good enough ? as they are available from 2-4.75 from Dingocroft.

Do these go well together ?

Lastly, i'm not sure how recovery from the rear is done; I have a towbar fitted

Can help with most of it, but for a rear recovery point have you thought about a NATO hitch, cheap enough of e-blag and easy to fit

Would these be a suitable rear recovery point, whilst keeping the towbar.

I assume these fit here:

Make sure that crossmember isn't too rusty is you fit those - you don't want a towing point to become a flying projectile when it has another vehicle attached to it during a recovery.

Yeah great

I'd go for shakles and rope/strops rated and TESTED for 7 tonne as a minimum

Tow bar is Ok. just, as long as it's sound, even so...... Thats only in theory good for 3.5 tonne strain, which pulling up a slope out of deep mud could push well beyond.
You might want to go as far as fit proper swivel recovery points in the rear cross member.
Again though it has to be sound and depends on how serious you want to take your off-roading

I agree, the rear xmember isn't really suitable for towing, so maybe also not suitable recovery. I've ready about a pair of JATE rings and a bridle to spread the load.

However, I can't seem to see any pictures of such as setup.

I'm just looking for the optimum setup (for my rusty old girl) at minimum cost

They look like they use the central holes that the NATO would use I've got a NATO and a separate towball, you can have both

Apparently this is the bridle type strap that ideally should be attached to 2 load bearing points.

At the front I shall use the 2 eyes in the steering guard I ordered last night.

For the rear, I will get 2 JATE rings, attach them to the existing tow points on the chassis. I can then have the option of using the tow bar for light recovery, or the strap if i'm in serious trouble and don't want to risk pulling the rusty rear cross member off.

I'm impressed with the smaller specialist suppliers out there, just takes time to find them

I was taught by a Ex Reme and the best way to recover any item is block and tackle technique.

snatch blocks doubling up 2-3 mayb even 4 times.

you can get a mechanical advantage with so much ease.
