aka Limp mode it's to allow the vehicle to be driven to a garage in the event of majopr problems with the engine management system

a for instants for you;
a mate bought a td5 disco2
driving it home he accidently went from 5th to 2nd at 70mph :eek::doh:
(only a second or so before he dipped the clutch again)
thought he'd fooked it completly it went the rest of the journey like it was fooked :D
his mate stuck it on his code reader and reset it no harm done

The wife's Subaru has an intermittent sensor fault that puts the engine into "safe" mode. Drops the power right down and makes it sound like a series petrol. I have an analyser permanently plugged in to keep clearing it. It limps bloody fast, though.
