Just bought a recon steering box which is apparently good quality and used by landrover. Box went in ok but put drop arm on with copper grease made sure it was in line and pushed it on. I know its tapered but i have tightened the nut up to 176 nm but something is stopping it going on. Had to use puller to get it back off and all splines seem good. Seems same size shaft. Can anyone tell me how to get this on.

Have you got the master spline lined up?

If you can get the nut on, you must be very close, the arm doesn't go right up against the bottom of the box.

Yea i have it all lined up slides on first bit lovely. Nut goes on and tightens but only not all the way on drop arm splines. I will take a photo

This is as far as it will go at 176nm.

doesnt look wrong to me ....

but what does look wrong - you need the fold back winged washer on there to stop it loosening. - one tab folds onto the nut and the other onto a flat on the arm.

Hes got a washer on. it just hasn't been hammered over yet! ;)

Ok it was a lot higher on old box and its only using 3/4 of the splines on drop arm. I havent pushed washer over yet as i was going to take it off again.
