hello there, 72 series 3, diesel gearbox. can anyone recommend a supplier or reconditioner of these awful synchro boxes?
it should:
-be easy for my wife to find first gear
-ditto second
-not jump out of third
-not lock itself into third
-be able to take a more torquey engine,
-be quiet
all of which the series 3 box fails on
we are just south of birmingham. His name is Tarquin.

yer sure it need recon?? it might just be yer detent springs being silly, less than a tenner sort.

as fer being able to take a torquer enigine, i think yule find that is is up to the job it was designed fer. having sed that it is rumoured that the series 11 boxes are stronger than the 111's

i have a rule in life to avoid things with springs in or ball bearings.
gearboxes have both. therefore i am terrified.
seriously. what are detent springs, how do you do it is it a box out job? please tell as she wont drive it anymore. which means i cannot have a drink!

whip yer tranny cover off ( he wont mind) they remove yer g/stick yer should then see a couple of 'L' shaped brackets on the top cover. yer balls and springs are behing them. take them out and dint let them fly away.
now remove top cover. you should now see th e plungers that stop yer trying to select more than one gear. they also help stop yer jumping out of gear.

so check yer balls are round, check the plungers move freely and check yer springs int bust. there is also anothe ball and spring under the 'center' nut? inbetween the two 'L' brackets

Cause rover cut corners and tried to reduce costs wnen they built the series III boxes.

I believe that an LT77 box is a good upgrade. Nevva done it - looks like a lot of work - but is stronger and has 5 gears.:D

this is all very well, but does anyone know of a good gearbox source.
i don't know if i have the courage to take the top off the box.
ooooooooooooooooh!

yer dint need to take the top off the box. yer only need take the selector cover orf. but if you'd rather pay out hundreds fer another box then carry on, on the other hand if you wanna check if you can fix it yerself fer pennies then follow me insructions

Do it, you know you want to. Like slob says could be fixed for a few quid. What you got to loose anyway?

You will all tell me not to be a prat or i got it all wrong but my understanding is that:-
S2 Gbox has straight cut gears on first and second which makes them stronger but straight cut gears dont work with scyncromech.
A S3 Gbox has herring cut gears on all forward gears= smoother and quieter but weaker.

WooHoo i've moved up from a Techie dweeb to a Prat:D in a few more month i might make it to normal and i can come off the littel blue pils.:D

Ps
Do i win the Fred jack prize?
