Im getting close to the end of my rebuild now, just a couple of things to do, and they are stinkers so I wonder if any one can offer advice:-

brakes - (or perhaps that should be 'what brakes')
shoes, drums, cylinders and copper are all new components. the brakes are utterly crap though - I took it up the top of the road, turned round and into second, got up to a massive 15 mph and brakes on, it slowed and eventually stopped - but I was left wondering if this would ever happen - ive seen glaciers with less unstopable malevolance!
The pedal is spongy, can be made firmer by pumping.
- what do I need to do - or is this just a case of the shoes\drums not being bedded in yet (Ive done less than 8\10s of a mile so far).

engine - its a diesel and there is white smoke, some on tickover, a big puff on acceleration, and it then settles down again. From what Ive read, this may be timing - can this be done at home or do I need to speak specialist help (you could argue that SIII ownership already proves the need for 'special' help).

various oil leaks - couple from the bolts at the rear of the sump and one from the oil filter. no amount of tightening seems to make a difference - they are present and messy but oil leaks on a LR generally worth worrying about - overnight sees a puddle about the size of a cd forming.

now for a helpful bit. one of the components I was missing and found it impossible to get hold of was a LR heater blower. at the weekend I went to the scrappies and managed to find a blower the right size and shape as the LR unit (sort of). it came from a rover metro, is made of plastic and has an extra box attached to act as an input duct. I cut off the duct, bit of sanding to clean it up and it went into the existing LR space on the bulkhead. only other issue is that it has a square output rather than a round one - but managed to squish my air duct to the right shape for this.
seems to be quite powerful to.

cheers, J

Brakes
1. Make sure that you have all the springs and shoe's fitted correctly.
2. Check that the hub seals are ok and that the shoes are not oiled.
3. Get a ezblead kit.
4. Bleed in order "furthest first"
5. Clamp off all but one of the wheels and set the adjuster, then do each wheel in turn.
6. Set the adjusters so the the wheel is stiff rotating forward then run it for 20 miles or so and then reset the adjusters so the wheel turns freely forward.

the oil leak problem on the filter may be due to the rbber ring seal may have torn or broken buy a new filter and see of that solves it and make sure you rember to put a little oil or grease on the threading of oil filter!!!!!
