I bought my first freelander yesterday after having a discovery 1 and 2 so I have a few questions
The wife has complained that i've bought a commercial with no rear seats so there's no where for the kids to sit
The first question has anyone fitted seats out of another car 1 each side facing into the middle so the rear floor and dog guard stay in ,if so can I have some info please as I was thinking of making a frame and mounting 2 seats on to it then bolting through the tie down bolts .I know the kids would love it even though there legs would be up a little
Second I have some very good bf goodrich tyres but they are 225/75/16 the tryes on the car at the moment are 195/15 can I buy 16 inch rims for the freelander and put them on (it's a 2003 model if it makes any difference)
thanks for any replies
more questions to come guys and girls

im sure i had read on here that people have turned commercial into family cars have you done a search on the website..

standard freelander tyres on a 16" are 215/65/16

Your gonna put ya kids in a car that you scrapheap challenged up?
Google Gresham landrover crash

Agreed, I'd strongly advise not to feck with it and risk your kids' safety. I'm guessing it's a 1.8?

As for tyres, no those 225/75s will not fit without wheel spacers or a 2" lift.

I would not do anything that I thought would risk my kids the job would be done right and much better than the disco1 and 2 seats that landrover put in the boot to make them into 7 seaters
thanks for the tyre info

hiya

ive converted my commercial and put seats in the back, but put them in the correct direction, had seat belt brackets welded in as per other models that had seats fitted, got it mot'd, changed log book and advised ins company , fitted rear quarter windows , all side panels replaced

may ask and hope this doesnt come across as rude why would u wish to fit seat side ways, as i would have thought the seat belts wouldnt stop anyone coming out in a frontal impact

all the wood etc comes out and has a proper foot well there , i dont know but i imagine trying to fit seats that are not as per oem would fail an mot and ur ins company may make ur policy void

hope this doesnt come across as rude just saying what i did

From what i understand and looking at my own commercial you can take out the floor and bulkhead and then just replace them with seats and all the other bits, Seatbelts etc, needed to tidy your van/car up.
All the fitting are there to my knowledge
You do have to re register it though with it being registered as a 2 seater
There are 5 seater commercials out there.

Why did you buy a 2 seater commercial when you need a family car though?

I would advise getting as much as possible from a scrap-yard right-off.

I would only be fitting OE LR parts.

DIY conversions on the basis of making up a seat frame yourself are a thing of the past I think. MOT and Insurance problems will almost certainly catch you out.

Years ago I helped convert a van to a minibus and also a big 6.6 tonne van to be a camper. Loads of hassle and inspections to get it right and 100% legal.

It's a bit like building your own trailer - that's not on any more either, but there are still loads of folks who don't know that yet, and are quietly welding and working away in their shed/garage.

thanks for the info guys ,if I do fit the seats i'll get the lot from a freelander and remove the floor and cage
The reason for the commecial was 2 very large german shepherds to get about and we already have a family car ,my thoughts end up being different to hers, I only need to collect the kids one day a week from school the rest of the time its only me and the dogs,so my thought was a swap one day a week
No its not a 1.8 k series with a blown head gasket ,so how much was that bet for WLJayne ?it's a 2003 td4 with the facelift front end .It was cheap though
After having 2 discos in the past a series 1 and a series 2 I thought the freelander would be ok as its so much smaller for her to drive and much better on fuel
Thanks for your input gary and not rude at all, may I ask if the engine mods you did make much differance ,EGR bypass-BMW crankcase filter-Synergy-2 fitted

I very much doubt that. The LR group has alot more experience and expertease than you. Buy a gaylander with the right amount of seats there cheap as chips. Anything else will be a bodge.

I read the gresham story and yes it's very sad ,the idiot who worked on his vehicle should not have done the things he did to it
It seems he saw pictures and thought he could build his own off roader without even checking the vehicle was structulay sound ,obviously he had no idea about centre of gravity ,body roll and stearing geometry ,or welding experience to repair the rot
Any way the original question about the seats was for advice as to weather any one had done it ,now I have the answer

hiya, no probs

doing the mods did make a difference the synergy made it a new car, alot of difference and goes very nicely for a car ,

ref the rear seats could u just put one in, so ur dogs have got room and fold it up when not used, so one in the front and one in the back as the seats are 60/40 split

just an idea , but will have to change the v5 and advise ins

another thing is the vat issue , as if u claim the vat back and then install windows the tax man might not like it, as ur turning a commericial into a private

ive many a time gone onto different forums and all u sometimes get is rudeness and not helpful, thats why i like it here, there are some very knowledable guys here and always very helpful and never disrespectufl to others

well only sometimes, lmao
