Hi all

At the risk of sounding really dumb, I'm after advice on rear lights on my Freelander (2003 model).

I got flashed at by a vehicle behind me last night & got told my rear lights weren't working. The small thin lights in the bumper were alight but the ones in the cluster on the sides (with the reversing lights) were not, brake lights were working.

Now for the dumb Q, which lights should be alight in normal driving conditions, as I'm starting to doubt myself

TIA
Linda

That's the way they were made, I've always thought it odd to just have the rear lights in the bumper, it just doesn't seem adequate.

Here is a quote from another forum;

"fully legal & correct, upper lights are Reverse & Rear fog,

brake, tail, indicators in rear bumper so they are all visible when the back door/spare wheel is open for loading, blame EU regs for this. "

They make them like that because when the rear door is open the spare wheel obscures an upper cluster which would mean you'd lose your offside parking light.. they're duplicated on the Discovery for the same reason..

when I had my first Freelander back in 2003 I did the mod on the back lights because I thought the ones in the bumper were inadequate and they looked like trailer lights al that it took was to go to the scrap yard and get a couple of double pin bulb holders and wire them in with your tail lights ,I keep say I will do it to the wife's freelander but she wants it kept original.

Glad I found this. FL rear lights are neither use nor ornament in rain, especially on motorway with the spray, I get where OP got flashed.
FL site mentioned does not have the images at this moment.
I would love to do this mod, any more info greatly appreciated

Oh, and I assume this is all MOT fine

no MOT problems with the mod just go to the scrap yard and get the bulb holders that take the twin element bulb the lower watt side you want as the side light and the higher watt side as the fog light. I can not remember what the colour of the wires you want to connect in to. hope this helps

Anyone know if the rear light mod will work on a face lifted 04 model. Is it right it has canbus system and if so does that effect this kind of mod.
Could the light power come from the towbar socket?

well I was just thinking the cheapest way to go. i have not tried it on my newer freelander and yes that old can bus system is a horror but can not see any problems, and as the bottom lights are higher up I felt no need but may do it.

04MY on doesn't use CANBUS for the lighting circuit and is no different to 01MY on (changes to fuse layouts etc but electrical architecture is the same)

The facelift rear lights are higher then on the pre facelift versions so not much different in lamp height between the fog and tail lights.
