Hi everyone went with a friend to buy him a disco 3.9 v8 on an R reg 88600 on the clock clean boot floor rear arches already taken care of had 2 inch's of snow all over it outside temp was -4 and she fired up 1st time £1300 later nice.

as its a later disco 1 it has a high level break light in middle of the window on my disco i dont have this but when i have my lights on the top red lights on the rear pillers are stop tail should it be the same on my friends later disco 1 as he only seems to have break lights
if his lights should work the same as mine and be stop tail how do you get in to change the bulbs

There's a few variations of lights and bulbs fitted etc, the one you went to see sounds like its okay - ie the later ones just have stop lights at the upper ones. Does it have indicators in the upper ones or not? Maybe thats another variation, in the last year.

there arer indicators in the upper lenses to look at the lenses they look the same as the ones on my disco

there must be someone else on here with an R plate disco that could go out and turn their lights on and come and let me know if you have side lights on at the top of the lenses and the bumper or only in the bumper pls before my mate rips the back of his disco apart to change bulbs that he might not have to

Don't know what year an R reg is but -
my sister has a 1998 300 Tdi and it has just the high level brake light and 1 each side in the bumper ( 3 in total ) .
I once had a 96 and it had the same as you have your self .
I now have a Td5 and have found that apparently the last of the 300 Tdi's had the same set up as the D2 ( 1 high level and 2 in the bumper )
My sister has a 7 seater and I spent one very frustrating evening trying to get the upper ones working . I did discover that the wires are there but no bulbs - and no place for the bulbs either . You can change the lens for one with the bulbs I think .

I think you need to go have a closer look at your TD5, there is no brake or tail lights in the bumper on a D2.

On a D1, if you have tail lights in the bumper, then the brake lights are up top. There is no "age" to this scenario, it's as simple as some do and some dont have the extra upper tail lights, if they dont they can be easily added.

The 300 series arrived with the 1995MY and was fitted with rear bumper lights because the upper light rear light and indicator couldn't be seen with the door open, these were then removed from the upper lights.

Customer feedback said that this lamp arrangement was not liked, so LR went back to the old arrangement as seen on the 200s this was a dealer fit (modification), but the later 1995MY, 1996MY and 1997MY came from the factory with the new arrangment and LR didn't bother to remove the bumper lights thus the duplication we now have.

1998MY D1s for some reason reverted to the early 95 setup, although they had a HL stoplight fitted, strange :(.

You're correct UP - was talking to someone while posting and got it wrong .
The D2 has a high level and no brake lights in the bumper - just 2 in the light cluster .
The set up on the 98 300 Tdi is as I said - it has 2 in the bumper + the high level one . They just don't look right as the bumper ones are very low .
I went so far as to remove the lenses from the vehicle - being a 7 seater access to the bulbs can be difficult to say the least .
What I found was the wires were in place and had a feed when brake was pressed - but there were no bulbs and the metal strips going to the bulbs in the lens were absent . So if you wanted to get them working you would need to change the lens.
I'd imagine this can cause some confusion when people fit a SH lens say to an older Disco - and then find they only have brake lights in the bumper .

provided theres pairs of tail and brake lights and indicaters work id leave well alone till the warmer weather

got to the bottom of it in the end, it has the later disco lenses and still has bulb for stop tail bulbs fitted but the wires had not been connected and were just left bare floating around nice on land rover
