Rear light cluster problem both
  1. Hi All,
I have a disco 1 1997 which I have all but completed, when I put the rear light units in they are not working , I.e. Rear fogs stop and tail, but the reversing lights work ok, the rear tail lights and indicators in the bumper work fine. On investigation there is power getting to the cluster hence the working reverse lights. The rear eye level brake light also works.
I took the panel off at the back o/s and found there is a green and brown wire coming downwards that is not connected but can't see where it has come from, and a black wire that is not connected, when I stripped it down a year ago everything was working and there was a few random wires which had been chock blocked in, stupidly I must of cut them out thinking I would remember, I don't and now I'm completely stuck.
Can anyone help me as I want to get mot done but can't until this is sorted

    Regards

    Jim

Power to the reverse lights only means that circuit is ok also the earthing of the light unit is ok.
Suggest you find the ends of the wires u cut short and identify the circuits they had, if u find they are the missing ones then extend them to the multi connector at the rear of the lamp unit.
Haynes manual will give u the wire colour code for the circuits you're looking for.

Hi thanks for your reply, both the black wire and the green / brown wire are not short this is what is puzzling me can't see where they come from or go to,, does the main wiring come down the back pillar

Well, the black wire is going or coming from an earth connection, and the green-brown could be reversing lights.
If not reversing light then maybe the 12v aux supply that terminates in the offside rear light area, I say maybe as the aux supply is a green wire but I forget at the moment if it had any tracer colour ie brown.
Check for voltage on the green-brown wire with the lights on and in reverse, also if it's a aux supply it's a permant live.

I'd go with that. Looking at the wiring in my copy of RAVE for the Disco 1, Green/brown is associated with the reversing lights and apart from the rear windscreen heater, Black is usually ground.
