Thanks to Buster etc for previous info on seals / bearings etc, but before I start I have a couple of questions:

1. As far as I can tell my bearings are ok. Is there any reason why I can't just change the inner seal? The problem is just oil leaks.

2. Haynes manual shows a seal in the inside end of the half shaft, keeping the diff oil from getting along the half shaft (page 9.2 of book 3017). Nobody mentions this but if it is there it means the bearings just run in the grease they are packed with, there is no nipple to add more. If this seal is not there then the bearing must run in diff oil that is just held in by the rubber cap. As I have oil coming out at the end cap, I might need to renew this seal if there is one!?

Mine is a CSW 200TDi 1991
Cheers

if you are taking it apart then it makes no sense not to change the bearings too, they cost peanuts and you might end up doing it all again in 3 months if the bearings are worn.

also make sure you replace the rubber caps too, they are very cheap, soak in hot water for half an hour before fitting them as they can be a pig to get on.

Had landys for nearly 40 years, have worn out, bent, and broken just about every thing you can,but only once replaced a wheel bearing and that was on a mates series whos axle had run dry.the bearings are of the taper rolle type so any wear can be taken up on the locating nut[do it as per manual] clean your bearings of old crud, cover i fresh grease and replace with new seals. when done check by turning hub by hand, there will be some load, afterall you will be turning the diff over but hub should turn smoothly. In time a bit of diff oil finds its way to the hub to help lubricate it
