I lost transmission to the rear axle a couple of weeks ago, it felt as though it had popped out of gear, but on re-applying the clutch and first gear to get it off the junction I was half way across I went nowhere.
I know what you are going to say, "why didn't you just put it in 4WD and move" the problem being the 4WD wasn't working, another one of those jobs waiting to be sorted. It will have to be done now.
Assuming that it was a rear halfshaft that had gone I consulted the manuel and started to take the dam things out for inspection.
The near side came out text book style.
The off side will not budge. It turns in the normal way, it doesn't feel as though it is snagging on anything.
So why won't it come out?????
Suggestions on a post card please.
Be kind as it is my first posting!!!!

you might have to wedge a lever in behind the drive plate and try and lever it oot. sounds like it might be more than just a shaft .

you'd have to get the shaft clear of the diff to be able to get the diff out. which is why he might have to lever it at the hub end

Just a silly thought, before you started to take bits off you did check if the red knob was fully engaged?
I have seen this vibrate it's self out of gear before.

Also if you jack up both rear wheels you can turn a wheel to check the drive / diff.
