How can I tell if the rearend of my 2001 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 is going??

Reach up and grab the drive shaft, just ahead of the pinion. Try and turn it.
Backlash is measured in thousands of an inch. If you can feel it move, it's too much.

Not so. THe "backlash it measured in thousandths at the ring gear not at
pinion rotation. Also blacklash does not nmean much is rear end is
quiet. A sure sign is a noisy rear axle that changes pitch under load too.

Look out the windows. If you see trees and houses going
by...................then your rear end is going.
