so for the life of me i cant seem to find part numbers to tell me nor can search give me a decent answer.

is my rear diff interchangable with the front ? its a 4 wheel traction control vogue 4.6 my original one is sitting here waiting to be refurbed if it will go in the front then no down time as il do a straight swop if not then il pull the front out and drop it off and get that done first.

The rest of us will just leave you alone in here to have a good chat with yourself.

GRIMMER - there's one for you in here.

Heheheh .. If I'd seen this at the time ...

A diff can be used front to rear or rear to front, but is not as strong due to the handed nature of the Crown Wheel and Pinion. It's the main reason why when recovering people it's recommended that if you're doing the recovering you tow them out with a rope attached to your rear. Or pull them out with a winch, but don't pull them out by driving in reverse. Many say reverse pull 'cos you can see what's happening, but then you need your bonnet up to mitigate any rope snapping and shackles flying, which negates the view somewhat .. and you should still preferably use an external spotter to co-ordinate the two vehicles .. ;)

So your saying I can just get my old rear refurbed and drop it into the front axle then ?

Yes. I wouldn't use it offroad, but onroad it should be fine. It's not going to be quite as strong as a 'proper' front diff, but should work till you can get the real one rebuilt.

Will have a look see locally who can rebuild my old one up its been sitting on the floor next to my garage going rusty all this time

There is Hardy engineering leatherhead, Haven`t got a clue what they are like but they have been there for years, or have used a place in Teddington i think there called Rimmes they are a small 2 man band going for years if you need details I can sort it out.

If you ask @bankz5152

He had a new diff made by a guy who knows his stuff, however the guys website contains lots of info about the diffs,https://megasquirt-v8.co.uk/diff_faq.php
On the D1 / 90 , Basically front is the same as rear, but as it is reversed it is on the weaker side of the drive. They recommend only upgrading the front if you have already upgraded the rear.

Cheers

Yep! Nige at Xcess4x4 is excellent, really knows his stuff. However im not 100% sure the front and rears are the same, I think they are sided... Though ring Nige and see what he says!

OK so action plan will be to drop the front prop first to see if the whine goes away i check the vcu every couple of months but will check that also.

If i cant get a 4 pin front diff 2nd hand il pull mine and get it refurbed.

MIne is 4.6 and has traction control all round so i dont want to drop in a 2 pin.

I think we've been here before. Some of the early 4W TC cars still only had a 2 pin diff on the front!:eek::eek:

There was a thread on it somewhere where someone found out the hard way. Mind you, better to upgrade to 4 pin.

Yeah iv had a good read up again last time i touched on this was a couple of years ago so no to bad for a worn diff. Worse case is i pull mine and get it rebuilt and put it back in.
I Usually turn the stereo up lol.
Its not urgent and the weathers pretty crap it drives ok other wise.

Found the noise, alternator is humming I recently replaced the bearings as one had gone all sqeeky not something is rubbing inside the black plastic casing. Will pull it off next week.

I did replace front and rear diff oils front as clean as the day it went in the rear dark brown with a few iron fileings on the drain plug

As far as I know/am concerned LR never fitted 4pin diffs to the front of the later vehicles I believe it's a myth. I replaced my front diff 5 odd years ago, and given how solid the front hubs were, I doubt they had ever been removed. I pulled a 2pin front diff out, and mine's a 2001 vehicle.

I put a 4 pin rear diff into my front axle, because at the time I'd been told it was fine - it would be running in 'reverse' but would be OK (this was before the debate on another forum of the ring/pinion being cut the other way and any issues associated to that ).

That aside - it's been in there nearly 25K miles now and at the last service where I did diff oils, there was no more sludge on the magnetic drain plug in the front than on the rear. It's also no noisier than the rear and hasn't grenaded itself yet...

I know Ashcroft Transmissions do (or at least used to do) rebuilt diffs, and you had the option of upgrading the front one to a 4 pin center - which is what I'll be doing when I eventually replace the front diff again!

Four pin front diffs were fitted to 4.6 models with four wheel TC.
