Hi Guy'sIve recentley discovered that my rear crossmember is very rotten on the driver side.It only appears to be the driver side corner that has this problem.The rest of it seems fairly solid with no other signs of rot.I dont really want to go to the expence of replacing the whole cross member..Could i just get away with cutting the rot out and replating it with some steel plating cut to the right shape and size??I will eventualy replace the whole thing but not yetThanks For your help Gavin

If your intended repair is well away from where your rear x member meets the main chassis rail then yes, save youreself a few quid. If the repair is going to be visible when done I reckon its best to use a "backing strip" (steel flat 3mm thick) with a prepped gap of approx 3mm, then when you've welded it you can grind it flush and still have a full strength butt weld with full penetration (Ooer Matron).

N Ramsbottom is very good at sortin out rear crossmember type problems ,think he.s a freelander [crossmember] he is a hair dresser by trade, butt dont let that put you oft as he is very good at all member problems including butt welds, he sure helped us on the freelander site, , , ya f****** t****** b*** . sling
