lightweight1983

My 1979 lightweight requires a new rear cross member. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on the making repair?

The rear cross member is quite badly rusted and has small holes just past the rear spring hangers. I believe I need a rear cross member with extensions past the spring hangers, I have seen such a part on the Paddocks web site which appears to sleave over the chassis rails.

Any advice on the operation of this repar would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Tim

Correct chap they do sleeve over the existing rails. The best thing is to "sprag" the chassis with a restraint before you cut it and take reference measurements before also. Make sure that it is all square and level with no twisting before you fully weld it and that your original check measurements tally. It's advisable to take a couple of diagonal measurements as well beforehand and refer to these also.

yes! i concurr with mr pegden. i should of course qualify my concurence by stating for the record that i got my facts from the internet and in no way shape or form am i relying on experience to do this concurence. when i replace the front of my chassis i used wikipedia(they pointed me in the diection of haynes ) to get the measurments for the chassis and i was able to tap the parts into correct alignment.
always check with wikipedia before doing any work as you may destroy the galaxy

Yes! I concur with Mr Slob. Wikipedia is indeed a gospel to which we should all turn. You can take any story in it and apply it to any situation then use it as the basis for a sound, well reasoned, discussion. Slobs warning should be heeded as well as it appears failure to comply could result in burns to the bone and subsequent amputation of limbs!
