Hi all, happy new year!
After a bit of advice please, I have now removed the rear crank seal off my 2.25 petrol series 3, 3 MB. It was very hard and brittle so no wonder it was leaking. I think it was in back to front too as the spring was facing the clutch where the Haynes manual shows the spring facing the engine block, anyhow it’s out. My question to you more knowledgeable guys please is do any of you know where I can purchase an OEM seal kit for a 3 MB engine? I have been advised by a chap on here that this is what I need for the quality but can only seem to find a supplier for the 5 MB engines. Thanks I’m advance.

I dont know for sure but I would have thought the seals for 3 & 5 main bearing engines would be the same. I hope so anyway cos Ive got the 5mb seals in my spares box ready to go in my 3mb engine at some point in the distant future

Thanks Col, I would have thought so too but one of the suppliers said to make sure it was correct for the amount of mains there is that’s why I asked here as I don’t know just want to get it done and on the road again. I’ll make some calls tomorrow. Cheers

Flow chart for vehicle oil leaks

Modern car owner:
See oil on driveway, call garage book car in for repair, call company to come and clean drive.

Classic car owner
See spot of oil on garage floor, put on car club branded overalls, put groundsheet under car, put car on stands, degrease car to find oil leak, fix oil leak, fill oil, degrease car again, drive car, repeat process to ensure fixed.
Land rover owner:
Check to see if oil puddles bigger than usual, if no is there fresh oil there, if yes probably OK, if no fill oil.
If puddles bigger than usual, is it a lot, if no probably OK for a couple of hundred miles, if yes fill with oil probably be OK for a couple of hundred miles

Neighbour of landrover owner, is there puddles of oil on neighbours drive, if yes buy castrol shares he's going to be buying oil, if no buy lots of castrol shares he's going to be buying lots of oil

The 3 bearing has the split seal which you have to feed around the crank and then fit the seal spring which is also slit with a hook each end.

Thanks for your reply, do you know where I can buy a good quality one please? Or can you recommend one? Cheers
