on my 1970 series 2 the rear axle has a peice of metal welded on the underside on the pasenger side of the axle ...i cant get any pics just yet as my camera is broken ..... there are no signs of cracks / damage or leaks anybody got any ideas what it could be ? i didnt wonder if it was a cheap way of protecting from rocks and so on ......any help welcome

If its square channel shaped and welded to the axle its to reinforce the axle tube to stop it from bending/cracking .

Dont cut it off lolz ......

its for stiffening the axle my sii had it both the siii have it,evidently its not a MOT fialure if its rusted only if its raggy nice to know told this by my local tester who,s a genuine bloke

As others have said, it is strengthening. It was originally fitted to Military axles, but I believe later became standard.

ive had a good look today and it apears the original piece has corroded away and some one has welded a new part in this is why it looks out of place .....i do have milatary wheels but i have no idea if the axles are ....
