Hello,

My left / passenger / near side window doesn't work on my recently purchased P38 (1997). Now i've read a lot of threads and ive now gone through a lot of the "usual suspects" with no luck.

The switch pressed down does nothing, the switch pressed up gives the error "window not set > LH - F" with the ever so annoying buzz tone. Both up and down causes a relay in the door outstation to activate, i can hear and feel the click.

Things Tried;
1. When i opened up the outstation there were a few burnt components so i replaced it. No change.
2. Plugged in 2nd hand motor and regulator and touched agaisnt the door (no idea if that's how it earths). No change.
3. Pulled apart plugs, found slight moisture corrosion in black plug between door and body. Cleaned with WD40 and cotton bud. No change.
4. Found wear hole in solid red wire as it passes into the door from outstation, copper still intact just sheath worn through. Continuity tested all the wires from the motor to outstation and outstation to door-body plugs, all fine.
5. Removed switch panel off working P38 and fitted to mine. No change.

So i have run out of things to check. Ideas?

Anyone have a wiring diagram, or know what the red wire does?

I assume its running a CANbus system as it has outstations.

Any ideas/help much appreciated.

On my copy I double-click the RAVE icon, click on "Range Rover", click on "Range Rover", click the + sign next to Electrical Troubleshooting Manuals and then click on the year for your car. For the 1997 model the Windows part starts on page 235.

I cannot believe how incapable i am, that was so easy.

Anyway, red wire goes from BECM to outstation, so i will check if there is any signal from it tomorrow

It isn't bad. You can get the manual as a single PDF to go on your phone too. Saved me a few times.

If you want horrible then try the Jaguar JTIS software. And that's after the mind-numbing issues trying to install it on a 64 bit machine.

Is there somewhere in the RAVE where it will tell me what signal i should expect in the wires?

Damned if I know! All lines to me. Never did get the hand of the electrickery diagrams. Red I would take as power but I might be wrong. Ground would be the body so I assume moving a switch in the centre console either takes a BECM wire to ground if there is a wire for up and a wire for down or if there is a single wire then probably + volts or - volts, probably 5V or 12V. I'm guessing the BECM takes this signal and if the engine isn't cranking etc then it supplies a signal to the outstation to either send +V to the window motor or -V to the window motor. Given the number of wires there it looks like there might be a wire from the BECM to the Outstation for one-touch up, one-touch down, incremental-up and incremental-down.

Could do with someone who has done this before like @biggeeeee or @Saint.V8, perhaps. Saint is good at reading this sort of thing - better than me anyway!

Cheers for your help Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I found a great thread; http://rangerovers.net/repairdetails/becm. explained alot.

Today i hotwired the window and the motor works fine, so i assume the relay in the BECM has gone. Not starting that job so im just going to fit a temporary bypass for the road trip.

Trust you have checked the switch DOWN position for correct operation..?!

Hmmmm....from what I can see on the RAVE circuit diagrams,

The centre switch pack tells the BeCM that you want to open/close a window
The BeCM tells the door outstation to provide an earth and power (in the right direction) to the motor
The Outstation monitors window motor current for trap detection and also when to stop
The Outstation then tells the BeCM the 'condition' of the window and if it is set or not, or if the window gets trapped

If you are getting a click from the door, then the BeCM is doing its job by telling the outstation to do something....

Trust you have checked fuses 9 and 22 in the underseat fuse box?

yeah fuses are all good.

The motor doesnt get power so the relay is connecting the wires but there is no power going through. Im assuming its the BECM internal relay thats dead.
