I know this is an old chestnut but lots of you out there have done this before.

I am planning to have the holy old chassis on my 1997 300TDi 90 replaced with a new galvanised one, bog standard no frills.
  • Do DVLA need to know?
  • If so what do the DVLA need to know?
  • Might they insist on a "Q" plate?
  • Should I simply put the old number on the new chassis?
My insurance company just need my reasons and evidence that it has been done by a competant person (not me in this case).

So as long as I retain enough "original" parts to score 8 or more points it remains the original vehicle and not a "radically altered vehicle" and I keep the reg.

The chasis is not a direct replacement from the maufactureer so I can't have the 5 points, but it is not a "modified" chassis don't have to go through IVA (Individual Vehicle Approval).

I'm keeping the engine +1, the suspension +2, the axles +2, the transmission +2 and the steering assembly +2 which =9 points.

To save the MOT computer having a fit it would seem to make sense to make sure the old chassis is scrapped and tell DVLA the serial number of the new one.

New chassis do not have a serial number allocated to them.... as far as I know you have to sort that out with DVLA. I fairly sure that a new chassis made to the same spec of the original and not a second hand one is okay. It does not have to come direct from Land Rover.
So.... it seems that you document everything, reciepts for new chassis, you are able to confirm/prove it is a like for like replacement no problems.
DVLA are very helpful and nothing better than a new chassis being squeeky clean to look at AND on paper. You should get the new chassis stamped and I believe this can be the same as the original (providing the vehicle matches what is says on your V5) They will advise on this ... give them a call. Helps if you get your Landy nicked as well.... new chassis are desirable for thieves.
 
Thanks again. I've sorted out chassis numbers with the DVLA in the past and they have been very accommodating. I was buying one where the V5 registration matched nothing, no one had noticed for 13 years. I was able to find out where it was originally sold new and turned it out to be one of a batch of 4 and the wrong number plate put on it (so there must be another one our there at least). DVLA were happy to sort that out. The guy who did the MOT said that was nothing, they had one in that was 5 years old and had a different plate front and back.
