Just recently I have experienced a new rattle from underneath my 1991 200 tdi 90 hardtop. I'm near sure its coming from the handbrake drum. I'll pop the shaft off and remove the drum, possibly to find the cause. Maybe brake shoes, springs, clips etc. Are the culprit.

Any suggestions?

Cheers.

Without hearing the rattle it's hard to say, but based on my experience it could also be propshaft joints, the bearing where the transfer box output shaft comes out, or maybe the splines on the propshaft too.

Hello Brown,

Funny you mentioned the parts I have already replaced. Transfer box output shaft bearing was first, then uj's on either end of the propshaft.
I was wondering if the brake drum is the cause, not too hard to pull it apart and check.

Possible broken handbrake return spring, allowing the shoes to rattle? depends on the type of rattle of course..
