Hi guys i need help, my p38 auto dse is giving me a headache, firstly in drive when cold it seem to be slow taking up drive ie the engine revs quite high before any movement occurs, secondly it is sometimes a bit harsh changing up and also it kicks down two gears sometimes causing the engine to rev to about 4500 without significant acceleration, i changed the trans oil and filter when i first bought the vehicle about 2 years ago but have only covered less than 5000 miles since then, it has never been super silky smooth to change gears since i bought it but recently is has got worse, oh must mention there are no messages on dash and no faults logged and it does change through all gears just not as it should, ok sorry to waffle on but any help would be appreciated before i spend out on it .

Have you checked your fluid level?
Vehicle running started from cold select all gears for a second then back to park and top level up to the full hole (later models) early models you can top up via dipstick housing.

Also if sport mode doesn't engage properly or the gears don't feel right that can be to low fluid too.

Symptoms sound very similar to when my auto box cooler went and it was using fluid.

+1 Sounds like fluid level to me. Having to rev hard to take up drive means the torque converter needs to spin up faster for the rotor vanes to be able to impart the needed fluid force through the stator vanes to get you going on account of low fluid levels. Either that or the TC has failed, which as far as I know is practically unheard if on the D2. You need to check the fluid level at the very earliest before any damage is done to the box.

to me it sounds like a sticky valve in the valve block or worn clutches.check fluid level but also check colour of fluid .If brown and smells burnt its a clutch. If all seems ok then a temporary fix might be some lucas automatic transmission fix

As i say Temporary fix. If you need a auto box overhaul it might be worth looking for a second hand late HP24 instead of the HP 22 as with a change of bell housing and torque converter it will fit without modifications. If its an early hp24 the front pump will need changing

Thanks guys for all your replies i have decided to bite the bullet and let an auto box specialist who was recommended to me have a look, i will keep you posted if on what is found, might take a while though because he is busy till the middle of next week, good job it's not used daily so no further damage should occur, thanks again.

Hi Guys sorry it took so long to give an update on my gearbox issues, long story but turns out the so called recommended gearbox expert was a non starter so i bit the bullet and ordered a replacement box from ashcrofts and all seems well now, only problem is still slow to start off, its as jf the throttle is not very responsive i dont think its gearbox related because once it does rev the box responds as it should, any ideas and is the throttle adjustable on these damn electronic engines. oh its a 2.5 dse cheers guys.

Check the pipe from under manifold to MAP sensor. Make sure it is sound with no cracks or splits. What year of car is it?

Think green temp sender on cylinder head can affects gear changes,,wammer will know more on this..:D

Same as mine was it was the MAP sensor, slow in reverse too, and didn't respond well at stop acceleration, bought one from China (and its a good'un) then found another in the bloody shed !!!!! still in the wrapper
Part number
ERR3561

Or you could buy mine a bit cheaper, its still in the unopened wrapper

Save it for me. I might need it one day of you don't. :)

Although thinking about it maybe Marciej replaced mine when I was down there? It looks pretty good.

Had it the shed for I don't know how long, so long I didn't remember I had it..... until I bought and changed the new one....... THEN I FOUND IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Always the way. You should see how many air-filters I have in there.

Hi Guys back again with the dse woes, just completed a 250 mile round trip towing my caravan and all is well with the gearbox from Ashcrofts but throttle response from rest is terrible to the point where it is dangerous pulling out of junctions having to floor the pedal and wait for the revs to build but in neutral it revs freely, i have changed the map sensor as recommended but still the same, has anyone experienced this on their vehicle or have any ideas please.

Check the map pipe that comes out from the under side of inlet manifold to fuel filter housing is still connected / not split or blocked

Any smoke? If so check the turbo to intercooler pipes are all tight and secure. Might be worth checking inside too as apparently they sometimes delaminate inside.

My mate's my2000 dse has the same problem. He had another turbo fitted, all associated hoses/intercooler removed and checked out. Map sensor and hose replaced. Egr blanked. Still the same. Scary to drive pulling out of junctions or entering roundabouts. So if you find cure please post on here.
