Bought this range rover about 4 weeks ago, after a week I noticed oil showing on the ground, had a look and could see oil weeping from one of the pipes going into the adapter on the gearbox, manual gearbox, anyway gave the nut a tweak and thought I’ll look at it again in a week, well 3 weeks on I was about to go shopping when I again noticed oil under the car, had another look oil all over everything under there, so got under there and yes coming from same place, I disconnected the pipes from the oil adapter on the gearbox, and found the top pipe had two o rings both damaged, replaced with one o ring and fitted pipe back in place, but no the pipe at the top still dripping oil out, out again o ring damaged, replaced same again oil dripping, took pipe out again new o ring more care fitting pipe try it no it still leaking, for ---- sake off again fitted another o ring carefully in but no the ------- thing still leaking, I am not a novice at these thing but this naffing thing has me baffled, I know the old owner had just put in a new clutch so he would have take the pipes out resently but why would it keep leaking, the pipes look the same circumference so it can’t be on it bigger than the other, top pipe looks fine, fit the o ring over the pipe end push in and tighten, couple of times the o ring has been pinched, any ideas why I could be having this trouble chaps

Yes that’s a thought, Just fitted my last o ring and it went as it should, I am beginning to think maybe the former owner damaged either the oil pipe or the adapter, I can’t see any damage really laying on my back, I think I may have to remove both the adapter and the pipe, could be a case of over tightening. ,

Is there any signs of cross threading on the adapter, if not are you a 100% sure its not coming from somewhere close by. Remember oil can travel. Try looking forward of the adapters to see if the oil is finding its way towards the adapters. Failing that, remove and clean the adapters and look for signs of over tightening, if so, replace the adaptors. Clean and check the pipe ends as well. If they been deformed they'll always leak.

Thanks Mark, I am convinced the leak is from the top pipe in on the adapter, I spoke to my local Land Rover garage chap I explained the problem, he said much the same as me, fitting is correct has to be something wrong either with pipe or adapter or even both, offered to take a look on his ramp, so will pop it into him and see what come of it. Former owner claimed to be a fitter and I think between him and a mate fitting the clutch, they probably over tightened the pipes it leaked so they put two o rings in hopping that would cure the leak, WRONG. Anyway will drop into the garage and let you know what we find. Paul

Don't know why he disturbed the pipes, you can unbolt the adapter from the gearbox (two bolts as I remember) and tie them out of the way. That's what i did when I replaced my clutch pins. Hope he replaced them when he did the clutch, £2 and gearbox out if they fail.:)

Check the cooler lines at the front of the bus for corrosion while its in the air. Take a torch. Good luck

Well up on ramp this afternoon guys ummmed and arrrred and then one said that pipe doesn’t look straight to the adapter, could be cracked so basically I got no further on with there help, so I am going to local scappy tomorrow and see if I can find a secondhand pipe, all the garage could offer was we will fit a new o ring and see what happens, and only charge you one hour at £65 labour. The story continues.

Hope you get the adapter as well, the thread may be crossed of the pipe is not straight.
