Hi Guys,

Looking for a bit of advice if possible please :)

I have 63 plate Range Rover Sport HSE that i purchased last June. It went into Marshall's Land Rover Lincoln the day after boxing day for a full service, they rang me the following day to say the car was ready. I collected it, drove 12 miles and broke down. Marshall's recovered it, examined the engine and then told me it needed a new engine which has cost me £12,300. Upon examination of the old engine they found metal particals in the oil filter due to crankshaft failure leading to bearing failures and seizure. Land Rover will not cover the cost because I bought the car Via Synter Aution Group for main dealers. I am now thinking can I try to regain some costs from Marshall's themselves as they did the service? As this is a known fault with this engine wouldn't there have been signs during the service that would indicate this problem? and dont they have a list of all engine numbers that may / have been affected?

Any advice / info would be greatly appreciated !! Thank you xx
 
Its done 31,666 miles.

I dont think they ran it without oil, they changed the oil during the service then when they examined the engine after it broke down they found metal particals in the oil filter.

But shouldn't this have been picked up during the service ?

If this is a know fault with those engine I'd have thought the least they would do is have the oil anilized every change to see if there is wear on the internals.you can pick up problems like that way before they get serious by doing that.I ran very high mileage trucks for many years and we sampled every week,saved a fortune in preventing problems early
 
unfortunately, there has been many reports concerning this on D4s

feedback is where the big end bearings spinning in caps and blocking oil ways, causing the crankshafts to snap

it actually happened to one D4 owner, Twice

With that mileage I would be writing to Auto Express , Autocar........infact any motoring journo that might be prepared to take up your plight
 
Folks, My car has just had the same problem. No warnings, at the garage just 6 weeks before loud noise from the engine. Land Rover dont want to know as car out of warranty so no goodwill gesture offered. Any advice? 2013 evoque diesel.

'The noise that’s in your car is from lower end of engine more than likely the crankshaft and big end bearings.
This noise and wear is normally attributed to lubrication issue and due to high stress levels in this part of the engine is not something
That happened years ago but would have happened very lately and would have resulted in this shaft breaking completely within few days/weeks of noise appearing.'
They have also advised that cost price to fix is 10000€!

I can see from internet searches that this does seem to be a failing in some of these engines from 2012. Any advice on what to do next?

For starters I'd click on the original posters username and send them a conversation asking them how they got on. Unfortunately they haven't logged in for a while but they will also receive an email from the site telling them that you're asking a question. Other than that I'm sorry but I can't help, my own land rover is twenty years old....

Yours is the ford engine( psa) relatively rare for that one to go, unless you ignore the crankshaft seal leaking ?
 
I have a 2015 Range Rover Sport with 41k miles on the clock. Extended 5 year service plan so regularly serviced at dealership.
Catastrophic engine failure, metal filings in oil filter. New engine required.Quote £29,851
5 months out of 3 year warranty.

JLR, after 3 weeks, have offered to pay 50% (putting the price nearer what a non dealership garage have quoted without any JLR offers)

Advice please!
