hi guys time for a bit of advice.
my mate has an E reg 3.5 efi v8 Vogue that he is willing to sell me for mates rates.he is a machine fitter so does all his own serving etc. and seems to be very good at it(at least he is at work).Would this car be suitable for a bit of cheap and cheerful off roading cos I was looking to get a diesel disco/90?What sort of fording capabilities does it have?thanks!
Havent much response to this elsewhere so posted it here too

Give it a 2" lift, put big wheels on it (you'll need the angle grinder on the wheel arches) and whack a snorkel on it and you've got an extremely capable off-roader. Just be carefull of water near distributor and plug leads, and V8's require much more throttle precision than a diesel ;)

yeh I'll be using it to drive to mud and then to drive through mud and nothing else.first job is some MTs and recovery kit though. Snorkel will have to wait till i save up the pennys

bieng a rangie owner a agree with raz my 4ltr v8 was more than capable of going anywhere when were out but put it near water an it dies straight away diesels seem to have the edge on this #

its now 12 months on that my mates are looking at swapping for 200tdi's purly for reliablity and off road performance, dont think you could fully sink a v8 into the drink without some sort of prob where as i know am pushin my luck for ill sink the full bonnet under the water and to this day no problems have arisen.:D

3 times fella an it was only bout 2 ft deep though did go into it at about 40 mph hehe cut out just as i cam eout the other side of the lake in hill n ditch go on the site in gallery youll se the rangie at the bottom of the hill an the in famous lake botu 3/4 pics in on galllery youll see tubbies blue defender an john ackys in the pic aswell the white 110

If you prep the V8 properly itll handle as deep a water as youl feel happy floating in , and it certainly has the edge on other surfaces for power delivery , JMHO :)

yeah ill have fortune 4x4 look at it and try to be a bit cautious but that'll not last long.

Nah stick it in low and drop it in 1st and it'll crawl along nice and slow.

but if he is buying it for the purpose of off roading and he is going to be unsing the gear shifters why not get a manual anyway??

Oh I'm not saying autos are better just that you can get good control also yer don't have to mess about with the clutch sticking it in 1st 2nd or 3rd prevents the autobox changing into an higher gear an it improves control especially going down hill I prefer manual mesen but I was out in my mates auto this weekend and i was quiet surprised at how smooth it was.

this is what always happens when people ask for advise on "what car should i" just keeps throwing to many thing in to think about dunt it.

yeah a bit of debate rages but at least i get a lot of different opinons with several useful bits of info. Thanks for the help guys!

i lerned i want but cant afford a tdi!I have loads of time spent in LR diesels and i know thems good.
They hold there price better(and LPG holds better too).
for the price he wants for it tho if i knacker it then not too much lost.

well as started an in my opinion bieng a v8 owner if its all preped properley shouldnt haVE PROBS but if its standard ad get th defender deisel seems to go further in my opinion from experience on outings but am just into v8`s love the noise the smoothness of the auto box an so on but still oes do so amzaing things in my eyes hope ye get it sorted m8
